Using athletic field crumb rubber in sand ring

The ring at the barn I lease is fantastic in that it’s large (for a backyard arena), flat, and sand-based. What’s not-so-fantastic is that the footing is old (I’m guessing close to 10, 20 years?) and has worn down, so it gets VERY dusty when we haven’t had much rain. We could easily use at least another half inch to inch of more footing on top. It’s fine for flatwork, but I limit jumping in there since it doesn’t provide much cushion when it’s super dry.

I have the opportunity to purchase athletic field crumb rubber at a great price – the county is redoing a bunch of the fields in the area, so the company is selling the old rubber at a fraction of the price I’d pay for “riding arena” specific crumb rubber.

Question: does anyone have experience with using “recycled” crumb rubber like this? I’ve read it’s a much smaller size and mixes in more easily than the bigger pieces. Also, would adding it to “old” sand footing such as ours make it worse? I drag the ring frequently, so even if it does float to the top, it’d get mixed back in in no time.

That sounds like a great deal. I would go for it, unless someone has some horror story to tell

There are some concerns about health effects, but nothing too definitive yet. Maybe this is why the county is getting rid of the rubber?

We use generic crumb rubber (not specifically made for arenas) in our sand outdoor and indoor and it works great.

Thanks! This company has experience with the recycled rubber going into arenas. It’s incredibly affordable in comparison to the $6,000+ that the specialized companies were quoting me.

What is your source? I am not far from NOVA and could use some …

It is small. Really small, like the same size as sand particle, or a bit larger. I was lucky enough to get some crumb rubber from an old Vikings practice field.

The company who pulled up the turf advertised it on Craigslist for free (I did pay a minimal fee for delivery) so I took quite few tons of it. It has been sitting in my driveway, unused, since we haven’t put my outdoor arena in yet. The plan includes the arena for this summer (unless we move). I’ve heard good & bad about rubber in outdoors (but mostly with the larger crumb rubber), but I felt like this was worth taking the chance since I got it so cheap.
