Using DMSO question

I’m thinking of using DMSO & Surpass together to ease my oldest horse’s arthritic kinks. If you’ve done this or otherwise have some diy information, can you tell me whether it’s best to mix the solution together before applying or to layer it. Thank you!

Test it first–DMSO has an exothermic reaction with some things (heats up), and you wouldn’t want to be unpleasantly surprised.

I think I would rub in the Surpass in the mornings. DMSO at night. I’ll default to what Ghazzu has to say about this.

DMSO does/can heat up quite a bit.

Thanks. I didn’t intend to wrap it. Should I?

ETA; Yesterday, I put the DMSO* (by itself) on a couple of nasty arthritic lumps on my finger joints. It itched/burned slightly, and when that stopped, the pain went away. I used a gel that is 70% DMSO & 30% water, which I think is pretty mild.

Unless instructed differently by your vet. Generally you should never put wraps over straight DMSO.

My step father had bad arthritic hands after years and years of competitive show riding. He’d “wash” his hands with DMSO. Know others that have done the same. Plenty of people with the same who use Surpass also.

Women of child bearing years and or working on it should wear gloves.

You may know this but for others, use medical grade DMSO. It will say it on the lable. “Commercial” grade is cheaper but has impurities. It is used as a solvent among other things.

Where do you buy Medical Grade DMSO? I found “pharmaceutical” grade on Amazon, which is probably not the same thing. My jar of the gel doesn’t mention the grade. Thanks.

Pharmaceutical grade = medical grade

I believe the only real medical grade stuff out there is Domoso which is currently made/sold by Zoetis, and is prescription-only, and outrageously priced.

Note…white legged horses often/usually have a more pronounced reaction to DMSO.

I’ve used DMSO/Voltaren (our human version of Surpass in Canada) together (mixed). I applied once daily, no wrapping. My horse had no problems with it other than he did start to scurf after about a week (it was on the upper inner hind leg where there is very little hair). At that point I discontinued use as I didn’t want to blister him. He wasn’t sore or bothered by the scurf but I didn’t want to push it.

As a general rule, it safer not to rub and wrap…

Old thread, but I’d like to know what the ratio of Surpass to DMSO should be? Thanks.

I can’t imagine using dmso on myself . I’m sure it works but the aftertaste that you get. Disgusting!

I know this a very old thread, but I was considering trying this mix on a shoe boil. Curious what ratio you used, and for what, how often, and did it work?

It was so long ago I don’t remember exactly, but I think it was half the tube of Voltaren plus a glug of liquid DMSO. It wasn’t really runny so couldn’t have been too much DMSO.

I applied it once a day for about a week, then he started scurfing so I stopped. It’s hard to say how effective it was because he was on stall rest after doing the splits on one hind leg and straining something (like a groin strain in a person). He was almost totally unable to move for 2 days (we had to take food and water to him to make sure he was getting any). It did loosen up after those first couple days but was still very stiff, and then it actually healed pretty quickly after that.

For what its worth I’ve used this combo on both myself and my mare. I use the roll on DMSO and then put voltaren over it - whatever seems like a normal amount for the area I am treating on myself or the mare. My one ortho actually said “hey, that is a pretty smart idea” when I told him what I was doing for my own injury.

I will say, I am one of those weird people who can’t really taste DMSO - I can but its so slight that it doesn’t bother me. My barn owner on the other hand cant even stand a whiff of it.

Has anything changed in six years? We buy Domoso at the feedstore or saddlery, no problem.

My horse has what we think is a mild fascia tear just right of his right hip (so where the rear saddle panel sits). I’m wondering if this will help or hinder the healing process.

According to the manufacturer’s website, it’s still an Rx drug.

FDA thinks so, too.

Huh. It’s definitely sold on the shelf here, no prescription required.

Is it the medical grade or solvent?
Because you can certainly buy solvent grade DMSO OTC.
