Hey group, how do you guys feel about using frozen semen with a maiden mare (10-12 years old)? I haven’t talked to the repo vet I’ve used in the past yet but thought I’d pick the boards brains first. Thanks.
I’d rather use frozen on a maiden mare (and I don’t consider 10-12 to be a problem) than just about any other mare 
All other things being equal, maidens generally have no more problems with frozen than other mares. I wouldn’t be excited about using it on an older maiden, say mid-teens, but it just depends so much on the individual mare.
Same here. I’ve used it with maidens and had good luck. Wouldn’t think 10-12 would be an issue.
personally, I would want to check costs using both methods and also is the frozen LFG?
Add up all your costs then list the benefits of each and see where you come out.
I used frozen on a five y.o. maiden last year with absolutely no problem. One cycle, and pregnant. I am seriously considering using it on a 10 y.o. maiden I’ll be breeding next spring.
Used frozen Balou on maiden 4yr old with great Ocala repo vet. No foal
I’ve been using just about all frozen semen for the last 15 years or so with great success. I also believe having vet that specializes in reproduction helped my success rate a lot!
We’ve used it on maiden mares successfully. Not this year but they were 3 year olds and odd cycles.

Used one dose frozen Balou on maiden 4 yr old with great NoVA repro vet. I now have a beautiful, talented 3yo Balou filly.
Used excellent frozen and repro vet on a 4 yo maiden. Took 3 doses to get a pregancy. Got a lovely colt in the end.
Used frozen with a 12 yr old maiden (1st cycle) and a 13yr old maiden (2nd cycle)- just make very, very sure you have a great repro vet. I actually was dropping an intern off at my clinic (friend of mine) a bit past midnight on the 4th of July and there was my repro vet in the stock inseminating a mare- that’s the kind of repro vet I throw $$$ at

Nothing was used for cycling my maiden (you can’t make a mare cycle), but sucromate was used for ovulation.
