Utah wild horses

Where can I find the wild horses in Utah? I’ll be driving from Albuquerque to Salt Lake and would love to see some wild horses if possible.

TIA.

I’ve seen wild horses in Utah but was well up in the mountains, very much off road where cars couldn’t go. I think to get to where the wild horses were, took a few hours drive from SLC and then maybe an hour or two from the trailhead on horseback. It wasn’t hard to find them once we were up there, but not something that’s easy to do just driving.

If you’d like some feral horses go on a visit to Ute Mountain Tribal Park (not far off the logical route). They’re everywhere in there. However, otherwise, there aren’t exactly mustangs hanging out on the side of 191.

If you drive through Grand Junction, CO, which is about 25 miles east of the UT state line, there is a herd of wild horses that live close to town. They are in Cameo which is just to the east of GJ. It’s the Little Bookcliffs Herd Management Area. People often hike there and frequently see the horses. The horses don’t seem to mind the people at all.

There are also some wild horses along the highway south of Rangely, CO.

If you have a lot of extra time there are many wild horses near Maybell, CO in the Sand Wash Basin. This is in extreme northwest Colorado.

I can’t really think of any wild horse herds in Utah. There are some wild (feral) donkeys in the San Rafael Swell west of Green River, UT.

They are there but aren’t so easy to find. The kind of thing where you need to be up in the mountains, preferably on horseback in order to see them, given the range they cover.

The Little Bookcliff HMA wild horses are often found within a mile of the parking lot trailhead. The last time I was there there were 4 horses hanging out right at the trailhead. That trailhead is about 1 mile off the interstate.
