Okay, my mystery mare who turned out to be a GOV broodmare and 20 years old has found herself a lovely home where she is guaranteed a spot for the rest of her days. That is the good news. All I have to do is get her in foal to the lovely Mr. Rosenthal, also good news, as I think the foal will be nice. The bad news is that when we ultrasounded last month before we got started, we discovered a large uterine cyst. My vet told me it was a complication at her age and would lower her chances of getting pregnant, but that she’d had good success popping them and we’d do what we could. Understood.
We short cycled both of my mares with Dr. Douglas’ BET protocol which works as advertised. My really nice Jupiter mare went to Sir Caletto and was as textbook as textbook could be. The other mare was bred Wednesday, ovulated Wednesday night, so… hooray! However, Thursday when the vet tried to pop the cyst, no dice. She couldn’t get her arm through the last segment of her cervix. She told me that there could always be a miracle and the mare could get pregnant anyhow, and that the cyst would not impact the pregnancy, and that what we did would not have stopped her from getting pregnant. (I was a little dejected watching the old sperm come out ) She did note on the ultrasound that it looked like the sperm had gotten past the cyst, she’s just worried about the fertilized egg finding a happy place to implant. My repro vet is excellent, I just feel badly for the mare. We gave her a shot of oxytocin and I gave her side lots of kisses and told her uterus to be nice to the fertilized egg if it shows up. Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me?
