VA Derby mishap

Sterling Show by Silver Max

I’m hard pressed to imagine anything more frightening than having the saddle slip up the neck of a keen runner in the middle of the pack. Kudos to Pimentel that he was able to maneuver Two Months Rent to the outside, drop his feet out of the stirrups and get the horse back under control without causing any repercussions to the field.

Agree! The jockey did an amazing job handling the horse in that situation!

I was there, shooting out on the course.
It was horrifying.
that jockey deserves an Eclipse Award for handling it so well. He slipped his irons and rode on the horse’s bare back and was able to pull him out and, eventually, (sort of) pull him up.
Totally nauseating.
Silver Max nearly got run down by a NW2 who loves the squish!
They called it ‘yielding’ but the footing was excellent. Clement’s horse doesn’t appreciate a cut in the ground, apparently. He was flat. _______
Great race, and super card. John Dale Thomas is a master to get/keep that turf course in such great condition.

The crowd and most of the press corps were blithely unaware of the situation. They thought Pimentel ‘made his move’ too early! The announcer got it - it happened on the first turn, about halfway through. The horse was pulling like a freight train - slipped right up over his little shoulders!

The list of things I wouldn’t give for a seat like that and that sort of control in a crisis situation on horseback is distressingly short.

Kudos and so, so impressed and grateful it turned out so well.

Hunters rest… You wouldnt happen to have gotten pictures from the first? My filly won it and I’d love any pictures someone got that day. I had one in the 11th that didn’t like the yielding turf at all.

You may want to also check with Susan Carter who takes quite a few pix on the big race days at Colonial

I watched the saddle incident live on tv and it didn’t go unnoticed with HRTV’s coverage. It was almost a mishap with a couple jocks flying in from DelPark almost missing the VA Derby

Thanks… sent an email.

I just can’t imagine having been the one that saddled that horse… That much money at stake and the saddle slips… Yikes. I’d have thrown up the whole way home.

I got pix of the first, yes.
Send me an email at home and I’ll find some for you. : )

Actually I got some great pix. Make sure to email me and i’ll send thumbnails!!

Email sent! Thank you!

I think this is one of the many threads that got spammed yesterday. Posting that the spam was reported to the mods keeps 12bajillion of us from sending them the same link.
