VA to MI haul..anyone?

UPDATE 7/8: All set! Thanks! Looks like she’ll be picked up tonight or tomorrow. Woot!

I’ve been looking for haulers and having very little luck on the uship and what not. Had one guy who is kind of going south. Others are outside the time frame. Have a mare, ready to go out of NoVA to western MI. HC is in place all vx, easy hauler, etc 24 YO. Anyone have any ideas or even better, a spot? Just moved back to MI from VA and horse is happy there but I would like to get her home. THX.

When I shipped my mare from CT to MI, I used Nationwide. It was fine. She arrived in one piece but communication was lacking on the trip. She arrived quite a bit later than expected. I think others have had similar experiences

THanks. I have a call into them today but nothing yet.

I also used Nationwide from MN to SE VA. It is very hard to find someone that will do that route. What they all wanted me to do is to get the horse to Lexington, Ky and switch haulers.

If you can get Bill, do so. Last time he took my old guy from SE VA to MN and he walked off the trailer looking great. http://www.carisbrooketransport.com/

No advice on a good horse transport, but it is good to know that you are no longer living in Virginia in that place owned by the kooky landlord. Will you be in Michigan long, or are you still waiting to find out about your station?

I’ve done a similar haul several times; it’s not an easy route to book.

My hauler of choice is Tapp’s in KY. They go back & forth b/w Ky & NC/east coast almost weekly. They will work with other shippers (usually C&W, who are in MI) to go north. Horse switches trailers in Lexington.

I’ve had horses go between northeast IN & VA for years this way. Tapp’s is great. Horses always look good, trailer change is no big deal.

I’ve never had any luck calling C&W directly.

Try C & W Horse Transportation. They are awesome.

Don’t have any names, but good to see your post…you have been missing in action for a god long while. Fill us in when you can.

Do any of the folks showing at the big jumper series in Traverse City ship in commercially? If so, you’d think there would be empty trailers headed northwest when they are ready to ship out at the end of the month.

Thanks for the recommendations. I’m kicking myself because I had a couple of options as of last week but went with a guy who had good references and could do a direct route tomorrow. Was all set last week but yesterday it started going south. Guy keeps pushing back the date, won’t send a contract, and if he does what he says he plans to as far as all the pickups and drop offs, he won’t have much more than 5 hours of sleep in several days before he gets my mare. Doesn’t sound very safe to me.

As far as a general update, was in DC for the last 2 1/2 years. DH did a year of TDY to various Africa posts then was posted to Pakistan and spent a year there. Our next post to Zimbabwe fell through due to political issues in country and it was looking like another year of separation with Pakistan or TDY or Ashgabat. So DH went back to MI in Jan at the end of his tour for home leaev and while there, found another job. So we separated from the DoS.

I moved to MI in April (with the inlaws), found a house, and have been looking for a barn and a job and such. Found a great farm and would like to get Miss Mare moved before I start working. She’s doing great where she is (and where I’d intended to leave her if we went overseas) so the only reason I’m in a bit of a rush now is because I thought all was a go and now I’ve got her HC and new barn is holding a spot.

In GR now. East. Loving it. Beautiful community, can’t beat the weather this summer, great food, nice people, love our new place, dogs are happy, yada yada. It’s like something out of Pleasantville. Cherry on top will be getting the ol’ lady here and getting to start taking lessons again.

Hey Redmares–FYI: the owners of Tapp retired in the fall, sold their company to Mike and now it’s part of Lake Transportation. But they recommended the CW exchange idea too. I’m calling Jan over at CW right now (Charles at Lake gave me her cell) just to see what her thoughts are.

If you can’t find someone to take her all the way, there’s a very nice layover facility in Lexington on Newtown Pike a few hundred yards off I-75. Look for Newtown Station Layover on Facebook. Big, safe box stalls with deep straw bedding and plenty of hay. One of the owners is a vet and lives on site.

I used them when I was shipping a horse to Illinois, hauled him to Lexington for the night and met the commercial shipper for the trip North the next morning.

Morrissey’s runs from Virginia to Kentucky pretty frequently and they do a fantastic job, very careful and good drivers. Morrisseys Horse Pullmans, also on Facebook. They could probably help you find another hauler to get her to Michigan.

I live about a half hour/45 minutes west of GR. It is a great area!

Okay, I think I have something set up with D&L out of Ocala. CW lady (Jan) hasn’t called back. Have lots of other calls out but this looks like a possible good option.

Thanks you guys! COTH rocks as always!

Glad to hear things are going well.
