Vacation on a horse farm in PA

So I’m thinking of planning a weekend getaway, and staying in this cabin, which is on a horse farm and pets are allowed. It’s in Lancaster County, and in the middle of Amish country.

I also want to go to Longwood Gardens, has anyone been?

Longwood Gardens is beautiful. It will not disappoint.

Lancaster has so much to offer in terms of sightseeing.

Just a few weeks ago a friend of mine and I rented scooters and we went on a tour of covered bridges through Strasburg Scooters. It was a BLAST.

The amount of little Amish shops and bakeries is astounding. You will go into sugar coma heaven.

At some point, you have to go to breakfast at Shady Maple. Insane buffet.

Word to the wise - do not take photos of the Amish. Its rude. Its one thing to discreetly take a far-off shot of a buggy in the distance, its another to gawk and take pictures like they’re freaks. Not trying to be mean to you about that but its infuriating.

Welcome to the area (for your short stay)

Echoing spacytracy’s suggestions - there is a decent amount to do in Lancaster for tourists and be respectful of the Amish and the Mennonites. Mennonites don’t have the strict rules regarding photography but it does come off as rude; some sects of Amish have strict rules regarding appearing in photographs, however, so it’s generally best to stick with just taking pictures of the buggies and horses.

Kitchen Kettle Village is adorable and has loads of fun shops - they have a canning/jams/baked goods shop that is wonderful and has tons of free samples!

Shady Maple is the traditional smorgasbord around here but I highly recommend Millers also; they’re tucked into a little shopping area as well, so you can browse and wander if there’s a wait.

Of course, the Tanger Outlets offer good shopping if you’re looking for decent retail deals also!

I live near Longwood Gardens. If you decide to go there, send me a PM if you want to go for a ride with me. I hack on some beautiful Chester county countryside.

Also just thought to add:

Penn National Race Course is in Grantville, which is about an hour away from Lancaster, but if you’re into TBs or just enjoy racing, it is a nice side trip.

Oh Wendy is great!!! Horse person big time. Longwood is great. You’d have a blast. Maybe time it to go to the Dover Tent sale in Hockessin which I think is the 2nd weekend in August, August 7-9th!

Lots of cool things to do here.

Welcome to our little slice of heaven!! Longwood is a must and you will definitely not get bored here!!

Have a great time!

Also check out Lancaster Polo Club - great, cheap way to enjoy horses for the afternoon!!!

Thx all! I’m just down the road in MD, so already done the Amish thing. Just looking for a nearby weekend type getaway that’s a good mix of fun and relaxation. The scooters sound like fun! And we’ll do the gardens too.
