Baxter got his first DHLPP on Monday. He now has a growing lump in the spot no heat, pain or fever. Obviously calling the vet who gave it in the AM. What should I be prepared to hear?
This used to happen to my parentsā dog. Was just some sort of (allergic?) reaction and cleared up in a few days.
Obviously checking with your vet is the best thing to do, but IME those vaccination reactions arenāt terribly uncommon. My hound mix had a lump form after what we believe was a rabies vaccine (vet confirmed it was a vaccine reaction; it was given to him while he was at the shelter, and rabies is the only thing that shelter vaccinates for). It didnāt show up immediately and took a few weeks to completely resolve. He wasnāt in really bad shape when we adopted him, but he was a bit skinny and had intestinal parasitesānot sure if that may have been a contributing factor.
IIRC we havenāt had any problems with any vaccines since then, but it may be worth asking your vet whether this could be an issue with the particular manufacturer/adjuvant.

WHAT MONTH THIS POOR BOY HAS GONE THROUGH ! NOT TO MENTION HIS FAMILYāS STRESS ~
Itās not uncommon - btdt, scared the crap out of me. It was a kitty, and the rabies shot, apparently not uncommon with that vaccine, but not out of the question for any vaccine.
The vet will tell you - it should go down over time, could take several weeks, itās only a potential problem if it doesnāt go down, or gets bigger.
Watch it carefully. A co-worker had to have the lump surgically removed from her dogs leg from the rabies vaccine reaction.
My lab is having a lump removed next week from his backā¦vaccine reaction from a year ago. My new vet vaccinates in the leg.
^ aieeee. That was on my mind⦠Why there? Cat dying from a vaccination related cancer. Will open my big mouth

Lumps can happen when the vaccination hasnāt been delivered subcutaneously but gets into the muscle instead. I had a litter done 7 years ago. 3 were fine, the 4th wiggled at just the wrong nanosecond. Mega lump for MONTHS. Ruined her puppy show career.

Because the ex-vet was an idiot. I went through 4 vets before I found my current small animal vetā¦same for large animal.
my girl had a firm lump after a vacc shot early on⦠I canāt recall now (was 2 yrs ago) but think it was rabies. I called vet asap and they said happens frequently and it should go away in time⦠it did.
It is fairly common, and why we āmapā where vaccines are given so we can track each animals reaction or hopefully lack thereof. If it persists for more than a week or two or gets bigger instead of smaller them it should be checked out sooner rather than later. Typically serious, i.e. cancerous, reactions take longer to show up than a short term allergic type reaction. The point of the adjuvant is to cause the immune system to react, and some animals have more of a local reaction than others. It shoul be similar to a mosquito bite type reaction, if worse, time for a vet recheck
