Hello all, kind of a specific question but I recently purchased a young horse and his previous owner told me he got the 6-way vaccine plus rabies in the spring, they give the vaccines themselves out of a multidose bottle. I’m planning to bring him to his first show at the end of the month so I have the vet coming out to do flu/rhino, but how do I obtain proof of the other vax for show purposes? Since they give them themselves I assume there is no written record. TIA
I had this same situation. The breeder provided me with an email confirmation of the vaccine he ordered. Obviously the show will have to take your word for it that they gave it to your horse - maybe they can email a statement to that effect? Really it’s the same as if you give them yourself, there’s not a vet record there either. I think it will depend on show management. I’ve had no issues with shows here (CA).
My vet signs off my vaccines on the health cert. I buy them through her and she knows that I give them.
For USEF rated shows you only need Flu/Rhino.
I thought EHV-1 was required also
That is the same as flu/rhino
Now I am really confusing myself, LOL. Are all 6 way vaccines the same? It looks to me like flu/rhino is included in that, so maybe he doesn’t need it if I can get proof of the 6 way from the previous owner?
It is probably worth it to reach out to the show organization and ask them what they require for proof. They might or might not be happy with a note from the previous owner. They might require the vet to provide something.
Where I live, rabies only counts if it was given by a vet.
EHV is AKA rhino.
Definitely reach out to the show to see what they require as far as proof.
I would get the name of the vaccine (manufacturer and product name), plus the lot number and expiration date from the previous owner. Bonus if they can send you proof of purchase that shows these things along with a statement that they gave it on whatever date.
I’m not familiar with many combo vaccines but when you have the product name you can look it up online and see what’s included. There are multiple vaccines that are combined, from 2 all the way to 7.
Here’s a link to the USEF vaccine record form.

I used this to show at WEC last month. I had a change of vets, everything got screwed up so I used this, along with the receipt, lot number info etc and a health certificate, PDFd, sent to show health email provided 2 weeks prior to the show- in case there was an issue. The flue/rhino is what they are need (along w Coggins obs). I definitely prefer just having my vet records, but life blew up with the one vet and her electronic record, her being on vacation, just crap, and this was sufficient.
I literally only note my vaccines on my health cert and never have had an issue. They seem to be pretty lenient on what’s needed for proof of vaccination.
I buy and give my own vaccines. I type up a nice letter and list off the date given and what vaccines and include the lot numbers and labels for the multi - drug vaccines and my paid invoice from where I buy the vaccines. Example Fall Vaccination letter.pdf (291.3 KB)
Example attached. No issues with any USEF show. This obviously doesn’t show the invoice but I think you can see what you need to see better here.
