Hi,
I Have the use of a reg thoroughbred mare, she has these extreme veins on her face and neck and this soft lump near her jaw. Is this in the normal range for a Tb or something that need some investigating? The lump does not appear to bother her when I move it. She doesn’t appear to be uncomfortable but she is a new to me horse so I can’t gauge her demeanour or activity level at all.
I have called to make a vet appointment but not available for over a week.
Face veins are usually more obvious on thin-skinned horses like TBs, After exercise or on very hot days, the veins will look more prominent, also. On the other hand, sometimes it can indicate a circulatory problem.
I’ve always been a worrier about my horses and would rather call the vet if I noticed something new just to verify there is no problem. With you being new to the horse, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to mention it to the vet.
I literally thought this was a mare that was at my farm. SAME face veins. The mare I have in mind is 24 and is in great health. Probably nothing to worry about but no harm in asking a vet
It looks like that jugular vein may be thrombosed. It’s fine. Lots of horses out there with a thrombosed vein. Your vet can tell you for sure.
This was my thought as well. My horse ended up with a thromboses jugular after extended use of a IV catheter (post colic surgeries). Vet told me horses can live just fine with one jugular.
But, checking may be a good idea since us armchair vets can’t see the horse in person to be sure
Going to look that up, thanks.
My gelding has veins that stay popped out all the time on his left side. Vets always say poor guy and work on the other side. My understanding is it was over used at the track, someone explained its like a blocked vein. But he’s fine and good. I’ve had him since he was 4 and he’s 18 now, never bothered him.
