In other news, today was the legendary Verden Hannoverian auction of young riding horses, and it took place online. If you missed the online stream, take a look at the results here:
Only two horses to the U.S.?
4 horses to the United States.
Low prices.
Seemed that way to me. Then again, I haven’t been following the sale or most Warmblood related matters for a few years.
The sub 10k market is HOT right now in the UK though. This includes many breeds and types.
There is a glut on the market right now. Horse sales virtually stopped in the first part of the year due to Covid-19. Even Paul Schockemoehle was bemoaning that fact. He has literally hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of horses at his sales/stallion facility and his breeding operation, and his business workflow depends on a steady stream of customers. Like all horse owners in Europe and elsewhere, he is now stuck with trying to support all those horses. The issue is compounded by the fact that breeders have new foals that hit the ground in the past few months. Customers aren’t buying the sale horses, so there isn’t room at the training and sales barns for a new group ready to be made up and sold, which impacts the business of the young horse specialists who are stuck with the ones they have already started and they have no room for a new group of 3 year olds. And of course the young horse raisers are also stuck because they can’t send the 3 year olds off for training and sales, so it’s a vicious cycle impacting all parts of the industry. All this is to say it’s a buyer’s market right now.
Sorry, I couldn’t get the second page to load, so I only saw two. Thank you.
Perhaps reflective of quality. Knowing prices are down, many breeders seem to be holding on to their good ones for now.
I’m not seeing low prices. This seems fairly standard for the HV auction. The elite auction in the fall typically is where you’ll find the horses that bring top dollar, the spring and winter typically don’t seem to have as high of an average, though there is occasionally one or two standout prices. I think the top auction sales price was from the jumper side of the catalogue but the dressage catalogue overall had a higher average.
