I’m at a family reunion in TN and getting snippets about flooding in VT. How have COTHers, GMHA and Huntington fared?
Looks like a river runs through it at GMHA, so their July h/j show is cancelled. My place in Bennington County drained in a civil fashion but this is bound to place a serious strain on the local hay farmers who got Florida-style afternoon downpours all last week as well. The humidity has been brutal. Thank you for asking!
I hope Nicole/Vermont Blend is safe. It looks awful.
nutmeg – I’m in VT right now, but a part that hasn’t been badly flooded (near St. Johnsbury, 1 road closure because of flooding.) But we’ve been out and about today, and the “brooks” we saw look like rivers. I’m hoping GMHA isn’t as badly affected as it was by Irene.
ETA this is a “brook” near Danville. We could see the paths that people normally take to go down there to fish or hang out.
Jingling for all my Vermont friends. I saw photos of Quechee and couldn’t believe it. I used to live in Vermont a few years ago and have such fond memories of that state. How unprecedented and awful. Hoping everyone has a soft and dry landing.
I am in the middle of the worst of it, though my farm is high and dry. Yesterday our road was gone on both ends, today one end is passable again but it will be a long time until the other is.
GMHA took on a good bit of water Monday afternoon but it receded fairly quickly and cleanup is already starting. H/J show this weekend had to be cancelled because people were supposed to be arriving today and it just isn’t feasible (most of the roads in from the highway were still closed yesterday and likely will still be today). The plan for right now is that August H/J show will be extended to accommodate some of what is being cancelled this weekend. We’ll have work to do clearing debris on the cross-country course but the rings aren’t in terrible shape and new footing is already being brought in.
Sadly the VT100 endurance ride and ultramarathon scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled. Too many roads and trails are literally gone as of right now, and we have the same aforementioned problem of even getting people from the highway to ride camp. Its so disappointing because there were 31 entries for the 100 mile ride and more at the other distances. We will have a long cleanup and repair of the trails, but we are so fortunate here that landowners, snowmobile clubs, ATV clubs, and horse people work well together and everyone has a strong incentive to get these repairs done once it’s safe and feasible to get out there.
