My 4 1/2 month old foal was out playing today and she came back in with a vertical crack on her hooves one on each, this is our first baby so I’m not sure what we should do??? Get the farrier out to do something or?? I’m just not sure. Thank you!!!
Has she been trimmed at all yet? Was she actually born in Nov-Dec.? If not trimmed yet, she probably needs some toe removed. If toes have not worn off on hard ground, the leverage of a too long toe is probably causing the cracking.
Yes I would get the Farrier out, get her trimmed as soon as possible. Farrier can evaluate crack severity, recommend treatment if needed. Maybe just a trim will remove most of the crack. Don’t wait, the sooner she gets looked at, the sooner things get fixed. Leverage with a long toe is not something to put off changing. Our 9 month filly has totally new hooves, having grown out of her foal hooves already. She had been trimmed regularly ever 6 weeks and is on hard ground to wear them down. No long toes on her hooves.
Trim Baby beside a solid wall for her to lean on, help her balance during trimming. Hold hooves low to work on. Much less fight if she does not think she will tip over!!
Please call your farrier.
thanks guys!! She was trimmed about a month ago, but I will get the farrier out at the latest wednesday!
