Very premature foal

Probably a scam copycat account sharing an older reel.

I continue to be horrified by this, but one thing I do want to say in some sort of defense of the vet hospital–if they have to follow any of the same guidelines that the large and well-known teaching hospital near me has to follow, they can’t turn away patients for anything except a history of nonpayment or in cases of things like physical violence. They don’t have the same rights as a private practice to turn patients away for any reason.

The vets may not agree, but they also can’t force someone to euthanize their animal, and they can’t refuse to continue treatment.* If the owner is willing to keep throwing money at it, they pretty much have to keep going until the money runs out, the animal crashes beyond repair, or it gets better. “Better” being very, very relative. I know folks who have burned out from working there because of this, and others who are better at compartmentalizing who just keep on keeping on. But even the folks who inure themselves to it have stories of cases they wish they could have called sooner.

I am really, truly disturbed that poor Seven is still being asked to subsist like this, but I also don’t want to smear the vets in question without knowing the full story. We have no idea how they actually feel about this case.

*This is my understanding based on conversations with multiple folks who work at this hospital. I haven’t done a deep dive into the policies nor do I know the full reasons. I’ve been told it partly has to do with receiving public funds.

Nope. This one wasn’t a mini foal.
@moonlitoaksranch This foal wasn’t identified as a preemie, but not a normal, healthy foal.
The vid got my attention because it was filmed at the vet hospital.
My Bad for not noticing a date & assuming it was recent.
I’ll see if I can find it again & add here

I’m getting all the old Seven videos showing up in my FB feed. In the new Reels bit. Meta seems to be flogging Reels at the moment.

No worries. Thanks for clarifying.

Thanks for the info. I tend to side with vets when in doubt.

Seven isn’t a mini foal either? He’s a QH, most of hers are.

This one appeared normal size, coat was not rough like 7’s & more chestnut.
7 still has a dark baby coat.

They have body clipped him at least once, but if it was a red baby, could have been an older video of Patrick? He was roan I think? I don’t know all his issues but that foal was euthanized and she decided not to breed that mare again. A quick search looks like that was 2023

Weekly update

Seeing this foal makes me very sad. If he is not in pain (which vet and owner claim-say he is not exhibiting “pain behaviors”) why is his mobility so poor? typical foals his age are zoomin around bucking rearing and leaping like little spider monkeys. It can’t just be the mechanics of the limbs and restrictions of the braces/bandages and joints causing him to struggle just to walk or can it?

The vet is defending his treatment “oh we don’t know if he is in pain”.

What. The. Flock.

This is beyond grotesque.

The unstrapped front leg is so stiff he just about drags it.

Wow, that ad (?) at the bottom of the screenshot. I don’t think that is a life better than nature intended. I believe nature would have let this horse go long ago.

That poor, literally tortured, soul. It’s heartbreaking.

Being a good steward of our pets includes letting them go.

The ad is specifically tailored to me. The algorithm sees “horse video” and I get “horse” ads.

TRT are NOT advertising through this lady. FB is paying her to overlay the ad. I follow TRT so I get their ads.

Just to be clear.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn’t mean to imply that the advertiser was associated with the video, I was just remarking on the juxtaposition.

I have very little respect for that vet and the owner. This little guy would’ve been better off euthanized IMO. I think it’s pure ego and experiment at this point.

Same - if I were in that area, I would not be willing to have that vet see my horse. It’s clear they do not have QOL in mind, at all, and have no problem spending an owner’s money in the pursuit of futility. It’s gross.

:broken_heart:
I do believe he is being tortured and experimented on. None of his legs or major joints function correctly. It is inconceivable to me that he is not in low grade, chronic pain. What is this doing to the rest of his body? Ulcers due to stress? Laminitis due to uneven weight bearing?

Shame on the owner. Shame on the vets.

I blame the vet more than the owner. His heart rate and respiration aren’t higher because this is Seven’s “normal.” The vet can certainly nudge a conversation toward euthanasia and from the video, the vet certainly isn’t doing that.
