Found a lovely horse and need a vetting done. I might not be able to be present so hoping for one who will do the basics, then phone me to continue with any diagnostics if needed. Of course I want someone experienced with sport horses who’s good
Jeff Beshear for sure, extremely experienced vet. Also a husband of upper level event rider Emily Beshear, he works with top level horses on a consistent basis.
Highly recommend Piedmont Equine in the Plains. Sean Bowman is my preference (and he specializes in sports medicine) but any of the vets there are great. We have used a number of vets from the practice and they are experienced, very thorough, and realistic with results.
Virginia Equine Imaging, also in The Plains. I’ve had good experiences with all three vets in the practice.
Either VEI or Sean Bowman at Piedmont. Can’t go wrong with either, although both are very expensive.
Dr. Sean is our regular vet and is fantastic with lameness. I have also taken mine to VEI in the past for lameness issues, and Dr. Allen was great.
Another vote for VEI. Dr Allen and Dr Johns have both done PPEs for me and I would use both again in a minute. I have also used Willie McCormack at Middleburg Equine for PPEs but he may have retired- the last time I used him was quite a while ago.
VEI is top of the line - Dr. Johns has vetted a number of upper level horses for me. At Piedmont, I actually prefer Dr. Nolan for PPEs - I think he’s more rigorous but also more thoughtful about what a horse’s eventual job will be. He’s also good about stopping a PPE if they find an issue before running up the tab.
My 1st choice would be Dr Donald Kiefer- Falling Moon Equine Warrenton, VA
I will add my vote for Piedmont Equine. Dr Davis, Dr Diehl, Dr Anikis, and Dr Bowman are all excellent.
also, Dr Paula Horne from Waterford Equine.
I have used them all, and love them.
Thanksall! So far Harrison said he only does PPE’s at his clinic, Steve White doesn’t have an opening until next week, Middleburg Equine also said they prefer the horse brought to the clinic, and still waiting to hear back from Piedmont. Will call these others as well. Thanks!
What about Davis Equine? Never used them and don’t know anything about them really, but I think they’re based in The Plains?
I just contacted them! Thanks!
So just to update anyone who cares, PPE prices and procedures vary wildly in this area of VA! I won’t bore you with the intricate details of each one, but here’s a quick run-down in order of price:
Steve White-$195 for basic PPE, $43 Farm call, x-rays $160 per joint (but he was not available until next week)
Harrison Equine-Does not do farm calls for PPE’s, must haul to his practice (so for me that was out) Basic PPE is $365 and includes and endoscopy which when I asked if I could not do that part I was told “this is a part of our PPE” X-rays are $45 per view, $500 for 16 views, and $800 for 28 views
Piedmont-Basic PPE $425, x-rays $45 per view and package of 36 for $1,025, unsure of farm call price (this is who I’m using, Dr. Bowman)
Middleburg-farm call $40, but they prefer the horse is brought to their clinic. Basic PPE is $400 and they require you to do a coggins for $35 as well unless you can produce one done in past 10 days. Won’t go into details as they have all prices for x-rays, scoping, etc right on their website under PPE forms
Chad Davis-farm call $52, Basic PPE $550, didn’t get all the x-ray prices as I was on the phone, but I think it was right around $45-50 per view.
Thanks for the information. One point about Steve White (White Oak Veterinary Service) is that the cost per joint is for multiple images of that joint, not just one image. Steve is my regular vet and I have years of paying his bills, as well as experience with him on PPEs.
Oh yes, he was by far the most reasonable and I did assume everyone would know per joint meant as many images as needed He just wasn’t available the day I needed
But I’ve heard great things about Piedmont, too so I’m sure it will all go well!
Agree that most of us know what per joint means, but there are newbies on this board and it helps to be sure it’s all apples to apples.
I am sure you’ll have a quality vet coming and hope your horse’s PPE is acceptable tomorrow.
