Victoria Colvin and Clearway
i’m not trying to say anything negative about anyone. at all. but it would be a bit ironic if caitlin boyle won on her “old” mount over victoria colvin after betsee parker bought caitlin boyle’s horse because she was mad caitlin boyle beat victoria colvin at devon. just saying.
Horse showing is never, ever boring, is it? Boyle was amazing. Really enjoyed watching this event yesterday.

are hunters supposed to be on the bit as a dressage horse is? why or why not?

First level dressage requires a lot of half halts, engagement, and suppleness. No over-use of inside rein. Doing PROPER lengthenings back to working trot/canter requires a lot of SEAT. Not many people can pull that off.

I saw some horses yesterday that were really connected and had engagement, others not.

LY do not have bend, but they have slight flexion.

While it is nice that people like Betsee Parker can spend their millions of dollars on one horse for one rider, it kind of leaves the “poorer riders” who don’t have the “big bucks benefactors” on their side out in the cold. It does not seem like a level playing field for everyone. I guess it just gets old watching Parker buy all the “winners” for her kids. Sort of gives them an unfair advantage over everyone else. Maybe she should look at buying a young, unproven horse, but then again, that would not be an instant win.

You’re under the impression that life is fair? It’s not…in any arena, not just horses. Better get used to it.

Thing is, it appears that BP takes VERY good care of her horses. They’re not overshown, and she gives them rest when they need it (see: Inclusive). And they have a nice home for life when they’re done showing.

Given those points, I find it VERY hard to be critical of her. Just happy for any horse lucky enough to be acquired by her.

its not supposed to be a level playing field. Its a competition, not a “kumbayah fest” LOL

why on earth would she want to get a young unproven horse when she can buy a made horse?

for the sheer FUN of developing a young horse

I get what you are saying, but I agree with the other posters about life not being fair. Though there are many benefits to having an owner like BP in the sport (including being able to gawk at all her pretty horses), it seems like there is the potential for other competitors to be discouraged from competing in the divisions her horses show in. If you are showing against Tori, you better be happy with third place because chances are she is taking first and second. Nothing wrong with that, because we are supposed to be doing this for the love of horses, but it would be a little frustrating.

What is more frustrating to me is that Betsee doesn’t have a website. I demand a virtual tour of her barns and a bio page of all her horses. If you are going to collect all the top hunters, at least share them with us virtually!!

As demonstrated by yesterday though, even Tori Colvin can have an off day and not win!
Just out of curiosity, does her daughter ever show her horses? Just a casual observer (and admirer) of her ponies and horses here, but I remember someone saying something about that a few years ago. If not. I can see why - talk about pressure, both from the standpoint of taking the reins from the top riders and having these mounts who are already proven and having to live up to those expectations!

That came out a bit more gossipy than I intended, seriously nothing but curiosity.
BP’s daughter (who is the best-mannered, most adorable child I have ever met, and I am so not a kid person!; seriously, I love running into her and her nanny (my neighbor) in town) rides, and has her own pony, but no, she does not show BP’s “big name” ponies, at least at this time. She shows a bit, and was doing the short-stirrup the last time that I saw her at a show. Showing is not her life, like it is for many of the top pony riders, nor do I think she wants it to be.

This reminds me of a joke my trainer and I used to share:

“it’s not fair! They have nicer horses and they ride them better. Not fair at all!”

Nothing to add other than I believe the proper analogy for this latest sparring would be a 3rd/4th level dressage rider executing a 2’ course of fences.

I agree the industry standard DQ typically lacks the courage for this feat, but I kinda think they could pull it off.

of course, we don’t have 16 different movements to memorize (just 8 jumps which do not need defining), it’s pretty much just “canter”, “jump”, “lead change”.

… Carry on.

out of curiosity, how many horses does Betsee Parker own?

Boy, that’s a heck of a bad attitude towards any one of a number of owners who routinely put great horses under great riders. And where do you get " her kids"? Or that any of the many kids over quite a few years (and some adult Pros IIRC) she has put on her well known and proven horses were anything but well known, accomplished riders? She’s not making up colts or financing unproven, inexperienced riders. More like finding top riders to showcase her many top horses and Ponies…and, yes, there is an expectation of producing good results as there would be with any owner on any level using another rider for their horse.

And for some others on this thread, it’s not Tori’s horse either. IMO it’s good to understand where some of these top horses come from and how they get to top riders. Particularly those who are contemplating a career leading to eventually competing top level horses they will not be able to afford to buy or finance a show career for. Owners are your lifeblood, never diss any of them.

There are other names like Ms Clark and Bruce D who have owned horses many think the rider or trainer that rode it to fame owned. The sport needs them.

Oooh, more to say!
This is how horse showing tends to go everywhere though. Every so often a circuit ends up with either a really wealthy family or produces a really talented kid (or the double whammy, both!) and for awhile that kid/kids win everything, and then they age out and us normal folk silently rejoice. This happens at every level, the only difference at this level is that the winning price tag is now 7 figures and the kid also wins Grand Prix.

Unless you are at a pretty high level, you are not in danger of having to compete against anything BP has going.

I don’t see anything inherently unfair about getting beaten by a better horse (especially in Ponies where they Model and Hack). There will always be one, at least, best worry about improving self and realizing limitation of current horse and not devoting energy to what somebody else has that might be better then you and yours.

What happened yesterday? Did she have a rail?
Yes, she had a rail in the hunter class and then in the Hunterdon cup she had a very awkward trot fence.

Of course, today she came back and killed it
