Vienna - Spanish Riding School

Has anyone ever been to a performance at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna? My mom and I are planning a trip to Europe this summer and we are hoping to stop in Vienna. We would love to see the Spanish Riding School.

I noticed there are different performances and I was wondering if anyone had went and knew what the difference was between the performances. Any other tips/suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

check their schedule, I think they take a summer break.

If you go on an average day, you can go to the morning exercises and then in the afternoon on a tour of the stable. You don’t get to touch/pat them and you aren’t supposed to take photos. I had a wonderful experience and would do it over again… I went to Vienna from Prague basically just for the SRS but also enjoyed touring the Sisi apartments, having lunch at a cafe, etc. My hotel concierge arranged my tickets for the SRS morning exercises and the afternoon tour.

The tour of the stables is very nice. We were there in the summer too, so no shows; but we spent a nice day at Piber, watching training and admiring the foals.

Thank you for responding! Have any of you visited the stud farm at Piber? I saw it mentioned on their website that they do tours of the farm and wondered if it was do-able as a day trip from Vienna?

Agree that the tour of the stables is worthwhile. All the horses seemed relaxed and friendly; we especially enjoyed the snoozing ones laying in their stalls, just chilling, while our group was walking through the relatively narrow aisles with the guide lecturing.

We hit the associated shop before the performance, figuring that there might be a bit of a jam afterwards, as it’s small and there was only one clerk. Have fun!

I went to the morning exercise in winter three years ago and also had a tour of the training yard. I chose that since the price got me more than what a show would have. You watch for two hours and get to see several different age groups of their horses. It was amazing. I highly recommend doing the workout and tour. The tack room makes you drool. Perfect organization. Amazing cleanliness. So much tack.

Also, I may have spent a little too much in the gift shop.

This is why I shouldn’t post before coffee. I completely missed that. Sorry!

Loved the SRS

In 1997, my husband and I spent a month in Europe, driving around. I told him, if we are going to Europe, I want to go to Vienna and see the SRS. Before we left here, I had booked tickets for an evening performance. It was great.

Last year we spent 3 months travelling around Europe, 11 countries and ended up going to Vienna, so we did the morning training and stable tour. I think it was around 30 Euro each. Again, great. We thought about going to Piber, but we were travelling by train, so would have to get from the station to the farm, probably easy to do, but decided to not go.

Have fun and enjoy your trip.

If you don’t have a hotel booked yet, I would enthusiastically suggest the Hotel Steigenberger. It is just 2 blocks from the Spanish Riding School and several museums and fab shopping and cafes, in a part of the city with little traffic. The only street sounds we heard were clip-clopping carriage horses. My daughter and were there last April, and watched the 2 hour morning school, then did the stable tour. It’s wonderful!

I have NOT been to SRS, but have seen the show at the school in Jerez, Spain.
I was there for a riding vacation & it was part of the package.
I admit I thought the performance would not be a highlight.
I was wrong. So wrong.
It had me near tears.
So as much as the training & barn tour interest me, I’d make every effort to see a performance in Vienna too.
Lucky you!

Thank you so much for the hotel recommendation! We actually don’t have one yet.

So disappointed. Just found out our itinerary for our upcoming Sound of Music tour this October, 2016 and the one day we are in Vienna the riding school is not performing. Any other “horsey” things to do in the afternoon or evening while in Vienna? We are on our own for the afternoon so anxious to get something horse related while in the city.

Better check on tickets if you want to see a performance and not just a training session, I believe tickets for performances sell out well in advance. I would love to go see them, even a training session.

On my list - actually, at the top of it. WILL GO sometime on one of my regular visits to Cologne.
