Just wondering how the day went and who won the big race? Gave my finish line spot to my secretary because my son had a big LAX game at 1:15 and could not do both but haven’t been able to find results anywhere…
I got to go!!
Bubble Economy and with plenty of drama! Took last side by side with Big Caddo but led then Big Caddo surged ahead and look like a winner THEN Bubble crept ahead to win by a head. WOW!! Grrreat fun!! AND …
Seeyouattheevent was scratched and didn’t run! But Arundels horse Commodore Bob (Jack Fisher trained too) won the Maiden 4 yr old Hurdle first race. The Steeplethon was won by The Whacker (popular with the crowd!). But Sammy Cockburns horse I"m Telling fell and horse ok but kid sent to hospital. OK but banged up.
Maiden claiming hurdle won by the Strittmatters Clorevia Farm (local owners) Star for Tina. Cool!
Huge, extremely well dressed and very young crowd. It was 90 degrees, sunny and humid so having a snazzy hat was a GOOD idear! I saw the hat contest and it took my breath away. Fab -U-Lous!! This was my first May Gold Cup attendance and I had a Members Hill pass so could see the whole enchilada! Wow, simply wow! I couldn’t believe the fancy clothes, the cleavage, the sunburns, the tailgate fanciness, the famous people I saw!!! Yup, it’s quite the experience!
Results on the NSA website but also on centralentryoffice.com .
forgot to add!!
Oh yeah…and I had a stellar idea…
I propose a Hat Exchange! I know how expensive it is to acquire a really good Gold Cup hat so…and once you have it; you can’t wear it every year or even again next year now could you so…We all pool our hats and exchange them. I’ll wear yours next year and you’ll wear mine or hers and we all have nice hats but don’t spend a dime! Besides…I’ll look better in YOUR hat than you did so…
Funniest thing I saw was women with just wads of colored chicken feathers in their hair as “hats”. Usually on the very top or sides. Not like a hairclip but worn like hats…:eek:
I let my chickens keep their feathers but next year??? Look out!!!
I can’t believe I’ve lived in this area for 8 Gold Cups and have yet to go. What the hell is wrong with me?!? I keep telling myself, “Oh, I’ll go next year,” but it never happens. I mostly want to go just so I can wear a really girly hat and a pretty sundress (since I never, ever dress up anymore).
Yup, Telly is all ok too. Chalked up mostly to inexperience. I had the pleasure of running across the course after the race to catch the bugger in the 90+ degree heat.
On a note about the fashion…oh good lord! The spectrum was ridiculous! I was back in the stable tending to Telly when I saw a girl walk through that looked like she should be walking the streets! Hot pink dress that was tight, very much the same style as the first dress Julia Roberts wears in Pretty Woman. You could see her thong through the dress from over 50 feet away. Telly’s co-owner’s wife pointed her out to me, she was extremely disturbed.
The crowd was definitely a younger crowd that I had seen in the past. I also couldn’t believe how many people managed to get passes down into the hospitality tent for owners/trainers/riders!
This is part of the reason I don’t go anymore. It’s always a crap shoot of who will be spectating next to you and I’ve had too many experiences with having my view block or disturbed by young, drunk, POSes that it makes the whole day unenjoyable. Maybe in a few years I’ll give it another try…
Bummed I missed it, but glad to get the wrap up, thanks!! Got to see lots of HuntersRest’s photos too, very nice!
Thank you for your excellent report, Wateryglen !! Sounds like I missed quite a horse race!! Not terrribly sorry to have missed the crowd though
!!
OMG! She made it to the stables!!???
OMG! OMG! OMG!! I SAW that drunk girl!!! OMG! She had like …a reddish pink one piece vet wrap dress on…no bra, thong, crept up her butt…OMG!! I hate her and hope she falls off…
I mean there were women there with formals on! And photographers stopping women and asking them to pose and took their pics…(whata pickup line! LOTS of pink & green - apparently the IT color of 2010!! I mean we ARE in preppie land! I stopped into a Hawaiian Luau themed tailgate (total strangers!) and watched some women making real flower carnation lei’s for their guests!!!
I told them how I knew how to make them… And the “promenade” areas were priceless.
To me? Pink & green are Jack Fisher’s owners racing colors!! I think Saluter! The hospitality tent was also for the police related folks, photogs, race officials etc. The food was plentiful!!
And I’ve lived up here since "76 and this was my first May one. Been to the fall one coupla times. Totally different. And where are HuntersRests pics???!!!
I have pix on my Facebook page
Also on LoudounTimes.com – look at “The Hoof Beat” blog (and comment please! Make them want to keep me!)
And in Wednesday’s Fauquier Times-Democrat (tell the suits that you love and crave horse sports coverage.)
And on VirginiaEquestrian.com
HAha
When we lived in the Caribbean years ago, I painted most of my kitchen pink and green (it didn’t look THAT bad). The combination kept bothering me until a friend (Prep school, the whole nine yards) pointed out that those were major preppy colors.
And, I did buy TWP a bright pink blanket last winter. Too bad it wasn’t trimmed in green. She trashed the pink halter I bought her. Evil pony.
I will have to look for pics of race day so I can see the fashionable crowd.
LOL, who knew I was trendy? I wore a pink dress and hat:

No green though. It was a beautiful day!!!
Trixie is Fierce!!
Oh Trixie! You be Stylin’ girl!!!
That’s the spirit!
Funny how a snazzy hat & some sun glasses makes you suddenly wanna pose or vogue.
Feeeerrrcce!!!
Horse race? What horse race?!!?

Liz Callar has posted a bunch of photos on www.lizcallar.com[/QUOTE]
Those are lovely! Is that Duff from Ace of Cakes?!? Did they design and make the trophy cake pictured?
Hey - I just saw the front page of the FTD - the banner is a hoot. Lots of women at the rail dressed up in bright colors.
Reminded me of 14th Street on a Saturday night in DC.
Seriously - HR - great job on the reporting and I’ll be sure to mention it in my next diatribe - I mean - conversation - with FTD staff. Sorry to have missed the races but was thrilled to read about it in the paper.
HarHar JSwan,
I haven’t been to DC in years and years, and I still remember 14th St.
I also remember sitting on 495 on a Friday afternoon, stopped in traffic, in one of those Pintos that blew up if they were hit.
Good times, good times.
