Virginia Hunting License Information

If you haven’t already done so, now’s the time to purchase your state hunting license. All mounted foxhunters are required to hold a valid hunting license to hunt in Virginia (including nonresidents/guests capping for the day)

It’s super easy to purchase the license online. Here’s the link. http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/licenses/

Once purchased, you’ll receive an email with a pdf attachment to print out.

You’ll notice something new on the site this year - when you purchase your license you can click a box to donate a few dollars to a terrific program - Hunters for the Hungry.

Hunters donate the meat to needy Virginia families; and the program pays for processing the animal into packages.

Also, for our junior foxhunters (and foothunters) - please purchase the proper license for them, and explain the importance of the license and its role in wildlife management (not just game management).

You can purchase the apprentice/youth license at the same time you purchase your resident license.

For guests, there are several options for in state residents. If they’re just coming out once or twice and will hunt in the same county - the guest can purchase a county license. If they’ll cap a few times in a given period, there is a 3 day sporting license.

Out of state residents must purchase a nonresident hunting license.

If you would like to provide additional support for conservation efforts in the US, please consider purchasing what is known as a “duck stamp”. This is the Migratory Waterfowl Conservation Stamp, and you can purchase a state stamp and/or a federal stamp.

The state stamp will be sent to you if you like. You must purchase the federal stamp at the Post Office.

The stamps are applied to your hunting license. (If you’re not a waterfowler don’t worry about obtaining a HIP #) Any American can purchase one or both stamps just to help support wildlife conservation. You don’t have to hunt.

My niece has been hunting (on foot), since she was 3 years old. I’ve always purchased a nonresident youth license for her. She thinks it is WAY COOL.

If you hunt fox and/or rabbit on foot or mounted, and do not use firearms, in Virginia you are not required to take the hunter safety education course.

I’d encourage you all to take it anyway - it is a terrific education. And when you participate, you can help educate other sportsmen about foxhunting, hounds, and horses. It’s free.

Hope all of you have a terrific season.
