I’m headed to Lexington, KY next week to move our daughter into UK. I have 2 dogs and planned on staying at a pet friendly hotel. One of the dogs is actually just a 4 mo old puppy. My concern now is that there are many family involved activities planned on campus next Friday and Saturday and I don’t feel comfortable leaving him now. He’s got all his shots but the rabies ( due at the end of the month ) but the bigger issue is that he seems to be afraid of barking dogs, not quite dogs, just barking ones and kenneling him would just mentally ruin him for sure.
So my question is, are there any good day care services that would suit a puppy of his age?
As a rule, dog daycare services usually won’t take dogs that young and certainly not without all of their shots.
I figured the rabies would be an issue…
Could you leave him at home? With a friend?
What about bringing a crate and keeping him in it at the motel.
Just find some time where you can escape for a half hour to walk and check on them.
I have done this, and honestly no one misses you!
I would leave them at home with a sitter, honestly.
There is going to be so much going on that you don’t want to have to worry about either one stuck at the hotel… enjoy moving your daughter in!
I wish I had family around to help but I don’t. And most of my friends who would help are moving their kids into college themselves so we are all the same boat. I’ll probably be ducking out from time to time and let him out. I just figured I’d give it a try.

Contact vets in the area for a pet sitter reference, and hire someone to stay in the hotel with him.
Although most pet sitters want proof of rabies as well. Any reason he’s not had a rabies vax?
We finished his DHPP series 2 wks ago and will do the rabies at the end of the month when he’s closer to 16 wks old. We both agreed that should wait till then. He’s just turning 4 mos on the 25th
If I were in your shoes, I’d try to find someone who can stay at your house with the pup. I’d call your vet clinic. We are always getting calls from people who want a pet sitter and typically have a few college aged kids on staff who are willing/able to do it. While they’re not bonded/insured, you’ve got the benefit of them having a connection to you via their job so it’s unlikely that you’re going to have any trouble.
I used a doggie day care down there a couple of years ago just during the day while at the races - twice in one week. They cared for my (at the time) 6 yo Irish Wolfhound. The name was Pet Fit Resort - they were in Versailles, but it seems their website is down.
They were fine. And they very kindly made an exception to caring for her a little bit late one evening, but she never stayed overnight. She had an individual room with a couch when there. Came home clean and sound. But thought she would have had a bit more companionship, as when I arrived there one time she was in the room alone, and no one was in the building. She was a little upset, but tends to be that way away from those she knows anyway.
They had required rabies and suggested bordatella, so doesn’t sound like it would work for the puppy anyway.
Considering all the horse people in the area, I would almost think there must be a way you could find a pet sitter for a short time. Agree about calling local small animal vets for recommendations.
Another idea would be to check with local shelters. We’ve had pet sitters in my area locally who are staff in the local shelter. They don’t get paid much in the first place, so are glad to have the extra, and still very caring.
I think I’ll have enough time in between some of the stuff going on to be with him. I’m just going to go with the flow and see how it goes. I figured I’d give it a try, just might be easier when he gets older to keep him someplace. I do have a contact if I need help but otherwise I appreciate your help.
One other suggestion, although ducking to avoid being flamed for this. I’ve had to take my dog with me so constantly this summer, I’ve found a way to leave her briefly in the car. I have one with a numerical keypad, and have found that if the last door you close (I have a Ford Freestyle) is the passenger’s front door, you can lock the car from that door, and the car will remain running - which of course is great to leave the AC on. My dog is older, and quiet in the car, and frankly, loves being in it. This has freed me up to run into the store, leave the car running at the barn on occasion , and finally leave her in the car when I’ve had to get into costume and makeup for the play she is in.
But, of course, you need the keypad type entry, and helps to try it out first without the dog inside - to make sure you can unlock it while it is running. I’m sure I’m breaking several laws, and have been looking over my shoulder each time I’ve done it this summer, but it has been a life saver for me, since I have no one else to watch her, or stay with her, and frankly have really needed this as an option. It has also helped save on time & gas since I don’t have to return her home and then go back out for every errand I run - and I am out in the boonies.
Good luck!
