Vitamin E Supplement

So my new guy has a few things going on. He has knocked his hip down and then we discovered that things weren’t going quite right because he’s got EPM. We’re treating the EPM and the vet suggested adding Vitamin E to the treatmen to help him out.

I have questions about it as she has a liquid but I’m not entirely sure how well he’ll eat that. I know there are pellets as well that you can feed. What’s everyone’s experience with this? His treatment drugs are on the way and I’m anxious to get him started on the road to recovery but need to tie up the last bit of this with the Vitamin E. He is boarder and I want to make it as easy as possible on my barn owner as well. He is in a pasture with a pony and they sometimes swap buckets so I don’t want it to affect her either.

He is a little piggy and he eats everything in sight but sometimes he’ll walk off and come back to his hay later and she’ll polish up his grain.

This stuff is the cheapest, easiest option, IMO. It’s a low volume so easy to get it into him in just a bit of grain. Seems to be palatable. Certainly won’t hurt any other horse, but if another horse does get into the bucket, it won’t make you cry because of the wasted expense

The cost per 1000 iu is nearly identical, so go with whichever you think will be easiest for you and the barn staff!

With EPM treatment, you really want to be in the 10,000IU/day therapeutic range - more for a giant horse, less for ponies. IMNSHO that shouldn’t be a suggestion, that should be a requirement. Having the protozoa die off ends up creating a great deal of free radicals, and the E is used to help manage that.

I use, agree with, and love the UltraCruz Simkie listed, but I will caveat things with the fact that some EPM horses need the water -soluble E like Elevate W.S.,

He needs his own bucket, and not anyone else eating his food while he’s being treated. He NEEDS his therapeutic dose of Vit E.

You know I drive by this place EVERY time I go to the barn from work so I’m calling them to see what they have and check it out!

She did send me the Elevate stuff but I didn’t know how edible that was? Pony Pants usually waits until he’s done but yeah I feel like he’s going to need some babysitting to get him to eat his feed. He’s a little piglet again (which is good, he went off his feed) so I hope he’ll eat it all and not let the pony get to it.

This was what was suggested.

My super picky mare was on Elevate WS for awhile and had no problem with it, but the cost  especially at the 10000 iu/day you need

You could try the Emcelle, which is less “sell your first born” to afford and similar to Elevate WS: https://www.vetprovisions.com/emcelle-tocopherol-1000ml

But really not unreasonable, IMO, to try the Santa Cruz stuff, see where you are in a month (or even two weeks?) and only go to the more costly and potentially more difficult to administer liquid products if you’re not seeing the results you want on the dry supplements.

Well he’s going to be on the 10 day treatment (Oroquin) and so I wanted him to have it at the same time.

When my mare had to be on Elevate we just syringed it into her mouth with a little applesauce. That way I was sure she got the entire amount. Its a nuisance, that’s for sure, but better than having it wasted. I used to call the stuff Liquid Gold. I went through bottles of it for awhile .

This is what my horse was on during his EPM treatment, recommended by my vet too! Horse ate it no problem, I got it in smartpak form and upped it to the IUs he needed

He’ll need supplemental vitamin e for a lot longer than ten days, though.

She said that she had horses she just kept on it because of compromised immunity after treatment as a preventative. I figured once he’s through this patch I’ll leave him on an easier to feed option for the same reasons. I bought him with the intent to resale (which may be shot now!) but I want him to have every chance possible. He’s a sweet kid and I sort of feel like he’s that horse that hasn’t quite gotten a fair shake at a future yet.

FWIW, the Santa Cruz Vit E is very palatable (pellets) to my picky mare. She also ate their Nature Vit E powder when that was available.

I would definitely keep him on the 10,000IU dose for at least a month. Protozoa will continue to die even after treatment stops, and he’s just in a compromised state to begin with. Then you can start coming down, but I would keep an EPM horse, even if “clear”, on at least 5IU/lb for life.

And yes, even the powdered UltraCruz E is palatable - tasteless. You just have to add it to at least moistened/sticky food as it’s VERY light and will fluff. If that’s an issue then just use the pellets.
