Has anyone met this stallion in person? How is he?
How are his foals?
I’ve been thinking I want to breed to a Connemara for a while now… I have this pony-sturdiness envy.
Plus, I somehow get this feeling my mare might not be so suited anymore to carry warmblood foals… For some reason, they seem to really drain her?

Well I feel exactly the same as you. If I breed again its going to be to a Connie! Having spent the last year working with them, I’m such a fan. And the crosses are wonderful.
He looks to be out doing something and he’s a really nice type. There are tons of Connie’s standing here that have no performance. But really good performance ones too. I believe his site has some decent offspring. Love the colour too! I don’t breed for colour, but I don’t do grey!

I have seen him in person and he is very attractive and well behaved. I am personaly not a big fan of the Connemara, so the fact I liked him says something! Great color too!
I have seen him and watched him go and you would never know he is a stallion unless you were told. He was wonderful both under saddle and on the ground!
how is his movement? any video of him?
EM, there is also Caraway Finn standing down in my area. They say he is a good one. I dont know much about Connemaras though. Hilary Lecluse is on my FB page, she is the daughter of the owner, maybe you can chat with her or go see him or something to give you an idea?

I posted video of him before, there was video online of him competing in Florida, I cannot seem to find it any longer on Youtube. He actually looks and moves a lot like my Gunsmoke grandaughter does, and her mother who is a Gunsmoke daughter. A little more horse-like, slightly hunter-y.
He is pretty slight in type for a Connemara, looks a lot more like a sport-pony IMO (like mine did, and her mother does). I always thought that line would cross very well with a horse.
if the OP is looking for a performance sire, and is in Canada she should contact M&M Connemara’s and inquire about Bein Mallins Rory O’Sullivan.
He has proven himself as a performance pony and sire of performance ponies

he is gelded now so a kid can show him but they do have frozen i think.
FYI, I found the link to the Top Gun video and it has been removed, so I cannot help you. The Gunsmoke line is a proven performance line, Top Gun himself is out competing with children and doing well, so I don’t know why he would not be a performance sire.
I think the OP needs to decide what type she wants, I would not think Top Gun would add a lot of substance.
PP I wasn’t commenting on TopGun in any way - i was curious what he looked like as I remember him being beautiful - but moving like a pony… but that might be faulty memory.
I do agree that Gunsmoke has produced some really nice ponies.
as for Rory - I was just giving the OP other options to look into… considering that she is in CAN and it can be a pain to get semen to cross the boarder
Not familiar with connemara registration rules, but apparently half TBs are OK. As a fan of both breeds, I approve! I’ve considered breeding one of my TB mares to a connie for a sport pony/horse. Mare is about 16 hands, good conformation, super disposition. What do you think of a TB-Topgun cross? Seems like people are more interested in “extra-large ponies” and small horses these days, but what about the market for this cross?
Please, no lectures on “buy, don’t breed”–I’m well aware of the risks, expenses, and responsibilities of breeding.

He is a really pretty stallion (almost feminine) but as a Connemara breeder I think he would be best used over a mare with considerable substance/bone. He is not one I would chose for a TB cross unless I had a very strong mare with a more uphill frame/big ground cover. I would like to see more offspring from him though!
Any foals sired by a registered Connemara stallion should be eligible for Half Bred registration (both here and in Canada) regardless of the dams status.
Yeah see here you get ISH registration for what you want to cross with a Connie. I have seen some beautiful and very nice horses by Connie’s out of ISH mares, warmbloods, and TB’s.

I have seen some imported ISH here that you know are likely half or more Pony-bred as they scream pony. There was one that I would have pegged for a purebred but the owner insisted he was IDSH—when I asked the breeding she had no idea There was definitely pony in that one!

This is where my hunter bias comes into play, I cannot seem to get away from it. I like pretty and flat moving horses. He looked more hunter type to me when he was young anyway, he looks like a little horse to me. But many of the hunters nowadays look like overgrown ponies. So I guess some people would call him a pony mover.
I don’t think I would chose him for a dressage or event sire, for the same reasons I sold my pony to a child for the pony hunters. But he might be a good choice to refine and downsize a big mare who is more of a dressage type? I don’t know. He is one of my favorites in the looks department.
I think that comes from his dam line (which I believe was something similar to the purebred you had or her dam?). Ive never seen this pony so I will wait to see more foals from a variety of mares.

Well, maybe this explains why I liked him, lol. I ussualy find Connemara’s too heavy and drafty looking. He DOES look like a sportpony and is a very nice mover too.

My mare is a TB mare; she’s GOV approved. By hardiness, I mean easy-keeping more than anything else… She’s got good hooves, solid constitution, she raced 22 times over the course of three years; then raised 7 foals and now, she’s gentle enough to take me for trail rides with friends as we both get back in shape. Me more than her though! :lol:
The only thing I’d change about her is add suspension and elasticity. But that’s a typical TB thing to lack IMO. If I had a carbon coby of her I’d be very very pleased and take it cross-country or hutning!
