Do you mean first two horses home? That is an exacta.
If you mean a single horse to either win or come second, that is a place bet.
A boxed exacta means you pick several horses (two or more) and bet every combination of them finishing 1-2. For just two horses that is simple, A-B and B-A, just two bets for a cost of $4. For three horses (A, B and C) it is A-B, A-C, B-C, B-A, C-A, and C-B, or 6 different bets and will cost you $12. The more horses you include the more combinations and the more expensive the bet becomes.
Its called an exacta. If you bet two horses to finish first and second in that exact order its an exacta. If you want those two horses to come in first OR second its called an exacta box. It costs twice as much to bet but you have a better chance of cashing that way.
You can also bet a single horse for first and second. That is a WIN/PLACE (also written as W/P) wager. Betting a horse to W/P is effectively buying 2 bets. It’s a bet on him to win for X amount and a bet one him to place for X amount.
Example: You like horse 1. You’ll be betting in $2 increments. The bet is “$2 to win and place on Horse 1.” This bet costs $4 total as it is the equivalent of betting $2 WIN and $2 PLACE.
Thank you , thank you for the answers.
Didn’t it (an exacta) used to be called a quinella as well? Ages and ages ago?

It still is at some tracks. It is in dog racing too, not sure why there is a difference in terminology.

Quinellas are still around, but they differ from exactas in that the first two finishers are selected regardless of order. I guess it’s comparable to an exacta box, but one doesn’t suffer the penalty of the “wrong” bet. In races where quinellas are offered and the bettor is focused on two horses, sometimes the quinella offers a better overall value than the exacta box.
EVD has Quinellas.
Another question: On the pick 3 at EVD they showed a pay out like 3/4/3. How Can you have the #3 horse in first & third place? Or am I understanding this wrong? TIA
Because the Pick Three is to pick the winners of three separate races. So horse #3 won the first race of the group, horse #4 won the second race and horse #3 won the third race.
The Daily Racing Form site has information on how to bet/wager.
Quinellas also differ from an exacta box in that it’s a separate pool, so will have different payout.
Sometimes it’s helpful to look at the payouts for exactas vs quinellas to determine whether you want to do a two horse exacta box or just bet the quinella. It’s not infrequent at my home track to see that the quinella will pay more.
Disclaimer: I really suck as a gambler and tend to split my high dollar bets with a friend where we’ll go in for a $2 win/place or exacta or whatever.
You will also sometimes see an Exacta called a Perfecta. I think the Perfecta term for an exacta is more common at dog tracks but I have seen horse tracks use the Perfecta term for an Exacta.
youbet really sux at educating newbies. Will join DRF so I can read what they say.
Thanks for all the answers.
