Just gut-wrenching this still happens. I hope he gets the happiest outcome possible. https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/general/absolutely-shameful-poor-horse-treatment-leads-fans-to-bash-multi-million-dollar-company/ar-AA1wnlhd
My gawd, the article says he was ârescued in 2019, used for breeding, and then had to be rescued againâ! The picture of him in that pipe corral thingy is horrible. So terribly thin.
Better ending than poor old War Ends got.
His poor jock saw him get slaughtered on a TV broadcast.
I was one of the neurotic people who saw the Humane Societyâs initial post that didnât ID him and couldnât sleep until I figured out who it was (which wasnât hard).
But this is the first I heard this part that @Aussie_2020 pointed out:
He didnthave a great life until a couple of years ago. He was rescued from neglect in 2019, then went back to stud in PA and then was neglected again. Itâs a sickening cycle the industry pretends is a âscamââ
Itâs from a user comment, so who knows if itâs accurate. I am skeptical that if he was truly ârescuedâ by a reputable organization theyâd allow him to go back to stud and fall through the cracks again.
Very sad. However, I could have done with a few more actual facts, since his history seems to be at least somewhat known. A bit of hysteria in the writing. It is great that at least a reputable group has him now.
Should note that this sort of thing happens every day to non-thoroughbreds also.
Any other publications about this? I agree with Betonbill that I could do with some more hard facts and less emotive writing.
And yes, sadly, this happens all the time to horses everywhere. I hate that they are in this situation, but when it is a famous horse it at least garners widespread public attention. Which sometimes does help shine some sunlight in the industry.
Agree the article I shared is emotional - I first saw the info on the KY humane society Facebook page - they werenât going to broadcast it until prior connections were contacted but word got out. Thereâs also a 2022 stud, Mischief Humor, in foster care that is worse off. Iâll share the link to the post they shared as they eloquently noted the other, less famous victims matter as much. This particular seizure had 13 horses involved.
The âweirdâ thing about this situation is that it was 13 horses in Franklin County of mixed breeds. There were thoroughbreds and paso finos per their FB posts. The story goes they got calls/complaints about the neglect happening on this farm, which was being rented. The humane society showed up and the owner signed the horses over to them. The humane society had NO idea any of them were as accomplished as War Envoy when they picked up these horses.
Hereâs the FB video from after they picked them up:

They IDâd War Envoy shortly after and made a post about how one of the horses was an internationally traveled BC horse, without saying the name of the horse. Thatâs the first FB post about the situation that I saw. But they posted pictures from training before the BC that made him easy enough to identify.
Just sickening and heartbreaking.
they didnât even know some of them were stallions because they were so starved that their testicals werent visible
Hereâs a link to a Paulick Report article with some further details.
Sheesh.
If anyone wants to give me a G1 placed son of War Front from a stallion-producing family, call me!
I promise it will have a happier ending.
Mischief Humor
Oh, I wasnât ready for that photo of Mischief Humor being loaded on the trailer. So glad that he and the others are in expert care now.
Oh god⊠those poor horses.
That photo of Mischief Humor was crushing.
And another horse was âhousedâ in a horse trailer??
I gasped when I saw the photo of Mischief Humor. And that dear, sweet face of Handsome Todd⊠I feel like weeping. Iâll never understand how anyone be so cruel. Those horses were dying a slow death and some human-- who was no doubt feeding himself-- was allowing it to happen.
@Paint_Party The root of much domestic animal abuse, such as neglect, is good intentions and little thought or self honesty. Not so much is due to deliberate cruelty. Someone collects horses, cares for them competently, has sufficient funds to cover the cost and then⊠Physical or mental illness, increasing age and/or infirmity, substance abuse taking its toll, a personal relationship breaking down, social ties shifting, even a change of employment and less money or less time to do the horses but the human will not or can not see that they are no longer able to look after their animals and to do the best by them. It is easy to acquire horses because we love them. Too many people, however, are unable or unwilling either move them on in good time or finally, if necessary, put them to sleep.
I see this all too often with private animal ârescuesâ. Pretty soon it becomes more like hoarding. But the people want to save them all and they canât see that in reality they are abusing them all. Itâs very hard to talk them into releasing even the most ill ones.
