Warm riding gloves?

For hacking out, which gloves do you prefer for warmth and good feel of the reins? So often the warm ones are so bulky…

I like the SSG 10 Below gloves. They’re warm, with thinsulate lining, and also completely waterproof. I wear them for both work and riding.

When I first got them they were slightly too bulky for riding, but after being worn a few times I definitely feel that they’ve broken in and become more pliable so holding reins is a lot easier.

My daughter got a pair of Roeckl gloves. Windproof/winter. Very warm, and not at all bulky. Expensive, but according to her, worth every cent. She sometimes actually gets too warm.

The SSG 10 Below are a good value and may work for you. Wimpy old lady here. I have never found insulated gloves I could “feel” through. So I have some workarounds. I wear grippy light gloves (with a nylon or poly exterior) and pull the sleeves of a light fleece layer up under the Velcro closure of the gloves. Then take one of those self-adhering heat pads and apply it on the interior aspect of the wrist on each hand, so it is on top of a fabric layer and held in place by the glove. Keeps the hand quite warm and still allows me to feel the horse’s mouth. Works OK down to about 15 degrees, for up to an hour.

Probably not as warm as something bulky, but the SSG silk lined soft touch gloves have just barely less feel than a normal pair of gloves. I find them warm enough, even when it’s single degrees, but I run hot.

I’ve been happy with the soft leather, lined ones. When I started hunting and it turned cold I has some doubts, but I’ve found them warmer than the more “technical kind” sometimes I’ll add either silk liners, or the back on track liners.

I guess it all depends on where you live and what you call ‘cold’ weather!
The SSG 10 Below gloves are not warm enough for my arthritic 62 year old hands/fingers.
I put the thin BOT gloves inside an older pair of thinsulite SSG gloves.
I tack up/groom in big thick mittens with the disposable shake-up hand warmers inside … and shove the riding gloves down inside the waistband of my breeches to keep them warm.
I can tolerate minus 10C / 14F for an hour or so like this.
And the nicely heated mittens feel SO good when I am finished riding!

I have the SSG 10 Below Gloves and they have been warm enough for me (usually) while riding/being active. Now if I slow down, then nothing is really warm enough.

LOVE THESE GLOVES!!! I have a pair for barn work too - they really do a great job keeping your hands warm, and not too expensive.

I have riding mittens -with the little finger separate. I love them. 40 fill and big enough I can wear second gloves under them when it’s minus a million.

OP you’re in NC, right? How cold does it get there?

I’m in New England and most of the time I am fine riding indoors with my SSG fleece-lined gloves, when the temps are around 20 degrees.

These days tho, in single digit temps and/or riding outside, I wear my Mountain Horse winter gloves. Bulky, yes, but warm enough. I’ve heard good things about the SSG 10 below gloves, tho.

Roeckl Polartec if you can find them - very warm yet great for riding!

SSG Winter Training. Warm, with good feel.

SSG Polartec 6500. My fat fingers don’t do well w/bulky gloves.
These are comfy and allow feel.

SSG Work N Horse gloves. Good into the teens. I have SSG ceramic liners for single digits
