WARNING Tarter Hay Cradle Feeder

Not sure if this belongs here or on Around The Farm, but I felt like it would get more traction and views here.

I very tragically lost my beautiful, talented, wonderful 5 yr old a few days ago after she caught her leg in the hay feeder. She all but severed her hoof from her leg, snapping all but 1 tendon, several veins, and all bones. She was playful but not overly so and we had the feeder for just around 2 years. After it happened I went to leave a review so others would know, only to find a review from someone else who lost their horse the same way. I thought I was doing what was best and never EVER imagined any horse could get caught up in the feeder. Please, if you have one of these feeders try and get rid of it. They are expensive, but no expense is worth the loss of your horse. Let my loss save one of you from suffering the same.

What a horrible, horrible accident. I am so very sorry to hear that this happened to your horse. I have looked at those hay feeders several times and always saw good reviews. Thank you for getting the word out and big hugs to you for the loss of your horse. It’s always hard to lose animals that we love but something like this is traumatic and heart breaking. I am so so sorry.

Oh my God I am so sorry. I didn’t know what the feeder looked like, so I googled it. If it’s not too hard for you, can you explain where your horse got hung up? I would never have guessed a horse could get fatally caught in it.

Very sorry to learn of your tragic loss, that’s awful.

Could you please be more specific about which Tarter Equine Hay Feeder you mean? I’ve had their Hay Basket for several years without incident, and would very much like to know if this is the specific model involved.

ETA: Are you referring to the Galvanized Bale Feeder?

Here’s a photo with a mark where she was stuck. It was between the “butt” end of it and the last “rung” that the hay sits ON. Hopefully that makes some sense. I bought it at TSC - https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tarter-cradle-bale-feeder-galvanized-cbfg?store=2220&cid=Shopping-Google-Local_Feed&utm_medium=Google&utm_source=Shopping&utm_campaign=&utm_content=Local_Feed&gbraid=0AAAAAD3fmFOTQoUYZ0EOBShunK45Nn8jE&gclid=CjwKCAjw9NeXBhAMEiwAbaY4lisJka0HGDw3e1Z1H5CI3DsumLSlQ87tAgCmD9fsItr_ZyhWl-Bb-xoCrykQAvD_BwE

Thank you for taking the time and effort to share the photo when you are grieving the loss of your beloved horse. This might save the injury (or worse) of someone else’s dear horse.

I am so sorry. What a horrible trauma for you both. It doesn’t look dangerous but by God horses are so delicate.

I am so sorry. Sadly horses can and do get hung up in just about anything available to them that they can get a foot through.

My sincere condolences. She sounds like she was going to be your dream horse. And thank you so much for the PSA.

I’m so sorry. Thank you for the heads up. I’ve been eyeing either this or an almost identical product at my local TSC and I’ll steer clear of it now.

I am so sorry, how horrific  I have seen two horses with very badly broken lower jaws from using similar feeders so I’ve always stayed well clear.
