I have a 10yr old cocker spaniel that started getting warts about 2 years ago. It started out with one that is on her back near her tail. That one has grown to about the size of a dime, and 2 times as thick. It’s flat and kinda hangs by the edge, so only a small part of it is actually attached to the skin. I talked to the vet about getting it removed and they wanted to completely put her under to take it off, saying they can’t just numb the area because a dog can’t tell you if the area is actually numb. I went in thinking they could just do it with a local, but I do understand about them having no way to tell if the local has actually worked. It is probably not even a quarter inch area that is actually attached. They quoted me $550 to do it, but said that if they put her under, they would go ahead and clean her teeth at the same time and take off all the other warts that have shown up.
Since that first one showed up, she has at least 5 other warts that have shown up, but all of the others are very small and haven’t grown like the one near her tail has. The vet has told me that it is just a wart, so no real danger to her, but I worry that eventually she is going to tear it off somehow. The vet said that is a possibility but the only thing to worry about would be the fact that warts can bleed quite a bit if they tear off. It is totally a cosmetic thing, especially in the summer because I shave her hair and it looks awful just hanging there.
So, I guess I’m wondering if anyone has ever had a wart removed from a dog using just a local? Right now I just can’t swing that kind of money on something that really isn’t that important medically. And the price may have gone up. This was quoted late last summer and 3 days later was when my barn cat decided to try and swallow a mouse whole. Which resulted in a $2000 emergency vet visit. But that is a whole other story….
So, ideas? Any other options for wart removals other than surgically? My husband says we should just tie string around it and tie it a little tighter every day until it falls off. I ask him how he would like it if I tied string around certain dangly bits that he has and tied it tighter each day until they fell off. That tends to shut him up… ?
