WATCH OUT! COVID scam!

Watch out! I saw something about a revival of COVID scams.

I got one today. It was an email from someone I know, but it was strange. Not something I would expect to get from her. It was looking for a particular gift card for a nephew. $500 and they would send check tomorrow to pay me back.

I can’t contemplate where the email addresses were stolen from.

What’s it have to do with COVID?

Scams never stop… there are dozens of variations where they pretend to be someone you know, and asking for gift cards is a huge red flag. Our local consumer reporter pretty much does nothing else anymore except report on various scams on a daily basis.

OOOOPs! It said she was diagnosed with COVID and had a bad sore throat and had to stay inside.

I left her a voicemail and talked to her Friday evening. She was on the phone to her contacts.

She breeds and shows cats - Oriental Shorthairs. I have purchased or rehomed 11 adult cats and older kittens over 25+ years. The scammer found a business with a huge base of email info. It included all of her contacts, including anyone who has ever purchased a cat from her, and her cat club. My initial reaction to the first message was that she was having some sort of a problem that involved her cats. How many do I have room for? I wondered.

Substitute “horse” for “cat.” The scammer hacked an email linked to a huge base of contacts. My spam app showed the scammer’s gmail address that was linked to her regular email. I blocked.the gmail.
