Water and prednisolone?

Horse is prescribed massive amounts of prednisolone tablets. I thought it was a smart idea to leave the dose in a syringe with water to turn in to a paste. Then I looked online, and one site said must be used immediately (that was for people).

Any reason why it cannot sit in a syringe in a mush form for a few hours?

Not sure if this information will be helpful or relevant, but my cat takes daily prednisolone that is compounded into a liquid for a spinal cord injury. This liquid has to be refrigerated, per the pharmacy.

So maybe you could store it in the fridge while you wait for it to dissolve?

Better idea, get one of those mini coffe bean grinders from walmart, walgreens, ect for about 15 to 20 bucks. Grind em up and put in their feed. Or grind and then use a small funnel or something to put them in a syringe, suck up some warm water, gatorade, pedialyte, whatever works, and dose the horsey! My mare was on 20 misiprostol a day for awhile for hindgut ulcers, ask me how I know the grinder works… old wormer syringes cleaned out are easier to use than human med ones. Especially since they have a cap!

We typically don’t let any PO med sit for too long once we’ve dissolved in water (for efficacy concerns as well as some of them turn into a solidified chunk in the syringe if left too long  )

Most pred I’ve come across melts pretty well in hot water but it depends on the manufacturer. For meds that don’t dissolve well we just grind them up and then add hot water shortly before administration.

For a couple hours, no. My late mare was on an INSANE amount of prednisolone for several years. You’ll be fine.

Word of advice - do NOT use compounded from Wedgewood. I did a trial where I kept her on the Wedgewood stuff for 6 months, saw no progress. Switched back to the pill form and within weeks her growths were diminished or gone. Yes, I was using the Wedgewood stuff according to label directions. It just didn’t have the efficacy of the pill form.
