Water bowl ideas for cat who loves to knock her water over

Just like the title says, my little Lj loves to pull her water bowl out and spill water on the floor. She’s not quite a year old yet and is a tiger DSH. I’m not sure the fascination with it, but it’s going to ruin the floor there if I don’t figure something out . I’ve tried letting the water drip in the bathtub and the bathroom sink but that doesn’t seem to do the trick. I can’t think of a bowl that would be heavy enough that she wouldn’t be able to do it and I’ve also thought about the water fountains too…

Thoughts?

I had to go to a heavy ceramic dog bowl when my cat started dumping his water out. (Oh, and he’s a tiger, too!) I’d be surprised if any cat could knock it over.

Another alternative might be to put the water dish inside another container that would catch any water that she spills. It wouldn’t be pretty, but it might save your floors.

One thing I noticed about the fountain that I tried, was that my cats played in it, and their paws sprayed/splashed water about five feet in every direction. They had a blast. Me? Not so much.

Good luck! Once they get fixated on something, it’s hard to change a cat’s mind!

I have a cat, Holly Holly Holly .plays / splashes and sometimes turns the Heavy Bowl over… since a kitten now a senior.

I put her heavy water bowls on a plastic tray or circle ( lipped) serving platter.

 • I roll a hand towel length wise into a long snake and wrap that around the heavy bowl…

** the trays/platters with the heavy bowls & circling snake towels are strategically placed on a puppy pad.

^ the above ensures no water on the floor

:oplease don’t laugh it works and that’s all that matters

I love my Holly Hollly Holly !

Thank goodness this water behavior is only a Holly Holly Holly sport and none of the other cats imitate this madness

I searched amazon for no tip water bowl and this one came up https://www.amazon.com/STAYbowl-NO-SLIP-NO-TIP-Food-Water/dp/B01NCM6808/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1520351516&sr=8-8&keywords=no+tip+water+bowl+for+cats

This might work… thanks!

@Zu Zu I love my Lj she’s such a doll and SO sweet but not when I step in a pool of water on the kitchen floor in the middle of the night! We have PergoMax through the whole house and I love it, but you can’t leave pools of water on the floor all the time.

I think I’ll try the dish I found on amazon and see how it works.

I had a cat that would drag the water bowl along the kitchen floor. I tried multiple things but finally got a water fountain. Problem solved. My only problem now is that the dog also likes to drink out of it even though it’s up on a table so I have to refill it a lot.

I got a Cat It fountain from Amazon last fall. Green bucket kind of bowl with a white daisy stuck on top the water drips off of. Had some doubts but it wasn’t expensive.

They fracking love the darn thing. After the initial bug eyed OMG gasp when I turned it on, they took right to it. At first you can fill it all the way up to where it’s over the top of the filter so they can lick from the pool instead of as it drops. But mine learned to lap it right from the falling stream in a couple of days. It holds enough water to be pretty heavy and refilling is easy, dump it in, don’t need to take the top off. Holds about 1,5 or 2 liters so good sized.

One thing I liked over some of the others is the rim of the bucket and the fountain are about 8-10" off the ground so right at chin height for most cats, no spill, no mess. Have to do something else for a tiny kitten, which you know will drive them nuts trying to get at that moving water for a month or two.

It comes with 6 or so filters but, according to the reviews, coffee filters work just fine. Last about 8 weeks, then they stop the flow out the top of the daisy. NBD, just change before it plugs the flow. Little aquarium motor, cord could be a little longer but pretty easy to deal with. Quiet too, unless you let the water get lower and splash inside the bucket like a fountain and even that is not unpleasant.

Mine were drinking out of the toilets and totally ignoring a bowl unless they spilled it, now they cannot resist a swallow every time they pass. And I can keep track of how much they are drinking, usually between 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup daily between the three of them, they aren’t big cats either…well, 2 of them aren’t.

Anyway, we all like it.

I went to Goodwill and bought a heavy ceramic crockpot insert for $2.99. It holds 4 quarts and is used by my 4 dogs and two cats. The dogs used to roughhouse and tip bowls over, but not this one.

All four of mine like to pull and knead around their water, Ralph would pull the water dish halfway across the hardwood floor. I bought two large/heavy glass bowls from the dollar store and a rubber food mat to place both food and water on four years ago and no spills yet. The rubber mat sticks to the floor and the glass bowls stick to the rubber mat.

@findeight that Cat it is super cute! I saw something like them on ebay but they were super cheap so I was a bit worried they were garbage. How long have you had it? I’m concerned about longevity.

Oh lord - I have one of THOSE cats. Mine would reach his front leg out as far as he could get (and he has loooonnggg arms) and try to pull the bowl toward him. If that did not work, he would stand on the edge and flip it. Jerk…I got a crock pot insert and that fixed his little red wagon. But then he took to wading in it. I mean, seriously, up to his armpits. facepalm.

Go to your local thrift store and see if you can a crock pot insert or a used Le Creuset pot. They are heavy enough not to knock over but like me you might find Kitty using it as a wading pool. That’s the cheap option.

I love some of the other suggestions on here. I may have to resort to them since Mr Baler is just starting to figure out that the water bowl is a fun new toy.

Little over 4 months. Just making my second filter change ( they recommend every month). The only problem was when ithe motor was running, you coujdhear the water dripping but it wasn’t coming up through the daisy- plugged filter after about 8 weeks. NBD. If you get one cheap,be sure it has the starter set filters. You can use coffee filters but it would help if you got familiar with it, simple as it is, before making substitutions.

Based on past experience with aquarium motors, they typically last at least a year, and often several or even many years. Keeping the filter changed before it plugs helps.

I looked at some of the more expensive ones but the bowls were lower, didn’t hold as much water ( for weight) and looked like attractive ways for kitty to make a mess.,

I had to give up keeping a water dish in the kitchen. The water dish is now set up in my shower stall where the cats can splash away

So far she’s doing well with my late Lexi’s stainless water bowl that’s big and wide at the bottom. She hasn’t splashed and no water on the floor so far.

These people have tons of stuff; http://www.lixit.com/node/740

I had to get one of these for me jerk water dumping cats (the 4 gallon one): https://www.amazon.com/Petmate-Reple…70_&dpSrc=srch

Works great! WAY too heavy for them to do anything with when it’s full, but still too heavy even when the jug is empty. I do have 5 cats and a corgi that drink out of it though, so it gets empty fast enough that it doesn’t get scuzzy before it gets empty, so without a bunch of drinkers that might be a problem. The base goes in the dishwasher.

Recently bought them a fountain and I’m trying to decide if I’m regretting it or not. They seem to really love it, but I’m pretty sure they’re also swimming in it as the mat under it seems to be staying pretty damp.

I know exactly what you’re going through. My cat, Luna, used to do the same thing and it was driving me crazy. I’ve tried a few different things that have worked for me.

First, I switched to an elevated bowl. I found that this made it more difficult for Luna to tip over, and she seemed to prefer drinking from an elevated bowl anyway.

Another thing you could try is a ceramic or metal bowl. These materials are heavier and more durable than plastic, so they’re less likely to tip over. Plus, they’re easier to clean and won’t harbor bacteria like some plastic bowls can.

Lastly, I’d recommend trying a water fountain. Cats often love the sound of running water, and this could keep your cat entertained while also providing fresh water. I found that Luna was less interested in tipping over her water bowl once we got a fountain.

I use a flat cake pan as a water bowl. 8 x 8. Can’t knock 'em over.
