Water jump footing question....

My Mom and I are in the process of building our own barn which is exciting and terrifying all at the same time. We needed dirt to level the arena so we decided to dig a small water jump. It’s going to be super simple, basically 20 meter circle sized and shaped with a small bank on one side where we’ll need to build up the ground.

We’re in mid south Alabama, and our soil is that nasty prairie gumbo clay mud. I know that we need to get the clay really compacted, but I’m at a loss as to where to go from there. With this type of soil would a layer of pond liner or geo textile fabric over the clay be a good idea? And then what kind of material do people typically use for the footing of the water jump? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I have absolutely no expertise to answer your question but I would suggest you ask a local expert for advice, such as a local course designer or the people who build the courses for local events. It is crucial that a horse has only good experiences in the water when you are training them. Water can be scary enough without adding in holes or an insecure footing for the horse. Also, a course designer might be able to come up with multiple questions for you incorporate around your water.

Thanks Willesdon!! There are two big events over in Georgia so perhaps I could call and see what they use in their water complexes. We definitely want the safest footing possible, and with our soil it’s going to take some work.

Theres a book by Hugh Morshead on building XC fences, I suggest getting your hands on a copy. It has all the info you need.

That Practical Horseman article is exactly what I was looking for!! Thank you!!
