water storage in barn with no water line

no money for putting the well in this year :(, but has anyone used something like this? I can plan to fill this up weekly or more often, but it would save hauling buckets every day !

Thanks!

My sister had something like that to collect rain water. Not sure if she used it for the horses or just to water the arena.

You can get all kinds of filter systems to work with tanks like that!

That tank is fine as long as it is new, or if used, has only been used to store water.

Have you looked at home made rain barrels? If you can get recycled food grade 55 gal drums, and use parts from the hardware store to create the faucet, they are cheap. Last one I made was> $15.00.

I haven’t personally but helped a friend set one up. They can be had used for a fraction of the price new around here. They were only used for “food grade” transport. I gather it is cheaper to sell used then to ship back to the company to refill.

We installed an inexpensive pump with an internal pressure switch to hook up a hose. A bit of “MacGyvering” but worked great.

I’m going to try and set up a rainwater collection system using one of those. The main tips I’ve received are to only buy one rated as food grade plastic by the FDA, and, to leave it in the metal cage. I saw a rainwater system where they removed it from the cage and the weight of the water pushed out the sides until it was almost round, and then it cracked. They sell for around $250 on Craigslist around me.

Another option for moving a lot of water are sprayer tanks that are on wheels and have pumps built in – a friend has a 250 gallon tank that he uses to water far pastures, and tows it with a small tractor.

I agree that Craigslist is a great place to find these things. I bought a 600 gallon container at a farm sale that I intend to use to collect rain water off my arena roof. I want to then hook a pump onto it to use the water to water the arena.

I have had it now for about 6 years and still waiting to finish the project:(

we found one on craigslist for $65, which is a steal compared to other things. it is sold as just a food grade empty plastic, with the cage. i only worried it wouldn’t be as effective as it is in my head, or that it would get funky with water in it between fillings. thanks everyone!

A couple considerations:

1)275gal is going to be H-E-A-V-Y when full.
Assuming you can run a hose to wherever you will set this up.

2)Keep it out of the sun or algae could become a problem.

3)How would you clean it?
Neck opening looks too narrow to get a brush in.

I was going to suggest a 1200 gallon poly tank on a ‘wagon’. Poly tanks for potable water run around 1.25 a gallon for the smaller ones and 1.00 or less per gallon for larger ones. I have a 180 Imperial gallon poly tank in the back of the truck and that works out to 225 US gallons; I make at least one trip a week to town for water for one horse.

That 6" fill is pretty tiny.

We used one off the back of the barn, on an elevated platform, to catch the rain water. Loved it. When we no longer needed, sent it on to a friend who put it in her pickup truck bed, filled it with water from her house & hauled it out to her pasture while her well pump was fixed.

Thanks![/QUOTE]

There’s someone in my area selling these for $75 each. Used once and clean. I would not pay $500 for one just to water horses.

My intention is to use it along with the tractor with pallet fork attachment to fill pasture water tubs. Fill it at the barn, drive to the water tub, and open the drain valve until it’s filled.

Do the math to make sure your tractor can lift it. 275 gallons weighs 2300lb, so unless you have a hefty tractor you might prefer a smaller container or use it partly full.
