A local business offers free sand, specifically noting it as useful for arenas. I plan to check it out, but wanted to see if anyone here has used sand specifically used as waterjet abrasive, likely garnet sand since ad notes sand is often pinkish. Anyone have any experience using this type of sand for arenas?
No experience. I bet it would keep your barefoot horses touched up between trims!!
Used water jet sand will have particles of the materials cut included in the sand. Also, it may have pieces of the material cut. Number and size of the pieces may be an issue in the arena. (you don’t want sharp, pointed objects in your arena footing. The vet bill will be much more $ than a load of clean sand)
That’s specific information you need, to make an informed decision before adding it to your arena. Just because someone else used it, doesn’t mean your source produces the same.
As an engineer who has used water jet machines it is a firm nope. The water jet is used to either cut materials or to remove coatings. It is like a very high pressure pressure washer that mixes the garnet sand in for more abrasiveness. It is free because after it is used whatever was cut or removed using the machine is now finely ground up and mixed in with the sand. The sand is supposed to stay separate from everything else for disposal and depending on what was cut or removed can be considered a bio hazard. It is certainly not something you want to be spreading over your property.
Oh, its used sand. That does not sound like a good idea since its likely full of paint or rust particles! And if its that fine or sharp, even unused, is that great footing?
Ad says there is some that’s hazardous, other isn’t much… but yeah, my property has a creek and pond, so I definitely don’t want hazardous runoff!!! Thanks!!!
