Waterproof dog blanket for growing Great Dane puppy

So, I know, I know, there have been a LOT of way older posts about this topic, but hoping for some current recommendations for your favorite dog blankets/coats.

We have an approx 4mo female Great Dane who loves to play outside for hours (husband and I both work from home) and gets walked 2x/day. We live in the Ohio Valley so we can get some yucky weather fall-spring. This is the first dog we’ve had that we’re going to need to buy a blanket for and I’m not sure best brands. I do want waterproof or at least water-resistant with some warmth. And she can play rough, so would like something durable.

One consideration is she’s growing like crazy (literally 4-5lbs/week) so I know she’ll grow out of whatever we buy her quickly, but I noticed today she was already shivering on our morning walk, so it just is what it is. I’m not going to have her being cold.

Including her pic for good measure!

I would check out a tack store with her in tow and try on mini blankets. We have definitley sold a few blankets to St bernards and Great Danes. And probably be cheaper than dog brands. My kelpie has a Waldhausen rain sheet (made for dogs). Shires makes some cute ones and I’m pretty sure Weatherbetta has some as well.

Actual dog brands, I really like Hurtta.

She’s adorable!

I love Danes and she’s just adorable!!

I also recommend foal blankets. I actually bought one for my fast growing large pup as well and it worked well for her. She didn’t really feel the cold and damp though ha ha!

I actually bought this one for my foal and then used it for my dog afterwards:

Schneiders has a great selection of horse style dog blankets with various levels of insulation, some water proof, some not.

Those will allow you to layer and such if necessary too. Easy to put on and off. The pricing seems very reasonable too.

I have had success with Chewy. I do a search for WOOL sweaters and my thin skinned, Fl dogs wear them most of the winter indoors and I only get them when they are on sale. (we live in PA now)

Then I use a Ruffwear puffy jacket. I have this one for my 100lb Ridgeback: https://ruffwear.com/products/vert-waterproof-insulated-dog-jacket

and my old man used to wear:https://ruffwear.com/products/technical-fleece-dog-sweater-fernie or this: https://ruffwear.com/products/dog-jacket-harness-all-in-one-overcoat-fuse-0515 as a base layer under his puff jacket.

My biggest grip about the puffy jackets is that I feel that it does not fall nicely at the hips. This newer model has a seam so it looks like it falls better.

I too would look at foal blankets.

PS thank you for paying the puppy tax. She is super cute!!!

Thank you all for the suggestions so far and the kind words about our sweet girl! We are unfortunately multiple hours away from any tack shops, so it’s not ideal to take her anywhere for a shopping trip (although I would love that!). I am checking out all the links, etc. Thanks again!

When I first read your promt I thought you were asking about blankets for a couch or crate. I have two mastiffs and am well versed in waterproof blankets for home and travel (towels everywhere too)!
Anyways back to your question. I have weatherbeeta blankets with no fill but the material is the same as a horse blanket so waterproof enough. I also have a Shires that is fleece lined and I really like the way it fits and the straps to keep it in place. The weatherbeeta has a front velcro closure so you don’t have to get their head through a hole. The shires has a hole where their head has to go and then it wraps around the torso behind the legs with velcro. You can also check out smartpak and dover, sometimes they have dog blankets on sale which will help ease the cost when buying for just a season as she grows. My one mastiff will not wear a blanket but needs boots for the snow because his feet are so soft. My other one will happily stay bundled up since she routinely likes to snuggle with a blanket over her. Good luck in your search!
