Waterproofing tailbags?

Hi everyone! I recently purchased a lycra tailbag for one of my ponies which is an upgrade from just braiding her tail. However, I realised after purchasing that the tailbag is not waterproof. Every time she pees or walks through a deep muddy spot/puddle, the end of the tailbag gets soaked. This defeats my entire purpose of a tailbag because she has a grey tail :woman_facepalming: Any tips on how I could possibly waterproof it? I’m thinking there is some sort of soap or spray that I could put on it… Thanks!

Maybe something for tents? Or wrap the end of the bag in plastic and keep it on with vet wrap above where it gets wet?

Are you actually putting her tail up? I just can’t imagine how she’s peeing on it if you are?

Braiding and bagging a tail isn’t long term management–you’ve really got to wrap it all up like is described here.

If you don’t want to go to this hassle–and as someone who has a horse that pees on her tail in the winter, when she’s blanketed, I totally get it–banging to the hock at the start of the winter season is a great way to deal with it. I do it every year. By the time spring rolls around, the tail has grown out, and you totally skip the muddy gross winter season. My horses all have better tails by taking to the hock in Novemberish.

I buy the waterproof tail bags from Schneiders for my haflinger mare. They are made out of material like waterproof blankets. I keep about a half dozen around to switch out. Her tail is so big and heavy, she can’t really avoid peeing on it, so the bags help save my sanity in the winter when it gets gross with pee/poo/mud.

You can also get Camp Dry at your local Walmart, Target or Sporting Goods store in the Camping section. Scotchguard spray will work as well.

Seconding @horsepoor on the Schneiders tail bags. Those are ripstop and waterproof.

Thanks! I knew there was some sort of waterproofing spray out there, I just couldn’t remember. I’ll have to get myself one from Schneiders after this one is ruined haha

My mare would laugh at you for suggesting something so simple as bundling the tail up makes it more difficult to make it gross.
She is an expert at peeing into/thru/all over her tail.

I bought this bag for my palomino filly this year for the same reason:

It has worked great so far, and has stayed in far better than I expected (she’s out 24/7 and plays HARD).

Putting her tail up as shown in the video would absolutely not solve the urine issue, as the bottom edge of the ā€œbundleā€ would still be in the line of fire, especially when she’s wearing a blanket or sheet with a tail flap. (Sidenote, I REALLY wish more turnouts were offered without tail flaps, or at least with removeable ones. It would make my Arab owning life sooooo much easier and save a ton of winter tail damage.)

I really like the tailboot from tailboot.com. They aren’t waterproof per say… but are a neoprene tail wrap so repels the mud and muck well.

They need to update their website. Things like ā€˜see the measuring chart below’ and then there is no measuring chart below (it is on a different tab) makes them not look overly organized.

I just noticed this after using the link that @rememberthenight gave out. I agree, it is very unprofessional, but with a little common sense, I think most people are able to find the chart like you did. I feel like this happens a lot with clothing brands as well. The size chart is missing or in a completely different spot.

Man, that IS a terrible website! @rememberthenight, do you use one of those tail boots? I’m really intrigued by the product, but I don’t want to spend that kind of money if it’s not going to live up to the price tag.

It is a terrible website. I do have the boots- I have three of the hybrid tailboots. I have used one of them now for about 8 months and decided to add more for fall since they are So much easier. I want to have them for the full herd eventually since I keep everyone’s tail up in fall for mud season.

I just ordered 2 of the Tailboots. Of course, I had to order custom. My horse has a hella tail. Tail ā€œwadā€ was 8 inches long and 8.5 inches around after I got it all braided and folded up. The neoprene should be so much better than the stinky, stained dragging in the muck Lycra.

I have tried to bundle and wrap it with Vetwrap and it only last about 2 days. I hope these will keep it all wrapped up.

I come from the ASB world, and putting tails up every winter is a ritual around here. I wash, and then braid, with yarn (4 strands) braided into it. I leave about 6" of yarn out the top of the braid, and have at least 15" out the bottom. I pull it up above the braid (it is important to keep it loose enough when you start the braid), and then wrap the yarn around the result- which is basically in thirds. Loop the yarn back through, so that you are sort of tying it, and then, tie it to the piece you left at the top. Cover the whole thing with a roll of co-flex. They stay up for weeks at a time- I generally only re-wrap maybe once, some get through the winter. And yes, the tail is perfect when you take it back down in the Spring.
