Waterproofing your older blankets

This topic has most likely been covered, but what works best to waterproof your blankets. I tried washing, spraying with Nikwax and heating in the dryer… didn’t work. I am trying to wash with detergent made for horse blankets, and I swear it stripped all waterproofing off of my blankets. I just did two blankets with a tent spray. I hope it works.

What works, I am willing to try anything. My super old Rambo still works, but I need options!

I have an original Rambo that belongs in a museum. I never could find the waterproofer everyone talks about with the orange cap (I asked your question a year ago I think). I’ve always used Scotchgard. I wash in a small amount of Woolite - no boosters or detergents, no softener, no dryer sheet or heat (air dry). I do pre-rinse twice to try to get as much hair and dirt out first - then the wash cycle.

I have always used Silicone Water-Guard. You can find it at Walmart. It is a spray can with a bright orange cap.
My horse’s blankets are 72-74 and I use about 1 1/2 cans per blanket. Of course a larger one would take 2. I think it is about $6/can. Currently listed online at $6.48 per 13oz can. Amazon has it for $7.76 per 10 oz can.

Be sure to do it where you have good ventilation. I then leave it a good 24hrs to “set” and dry.

I use the spray with the bright orange cap. I’ve also found it at Ace Hardware when I didn’t want to go to walmart.

We have had some ancient sheets and blankets that just lost the ability to retain water proofing over time.

I have several older blankets and the stuff in the spray cans was getting pricey. It was $14 last time I looked. I bought a gallon can of silicone waterproofing from Canadian Tire and painted it on. Very effective and somewhat less expensive.

You poor people in the US who don’t have the Privilege of a Canadian Tire store in your community! It has EVERYTHING from auto supplies through cooking and kitchen stuff to gardening and vacuums!

The gallon cans of waterproofing are probably available in big camping supply places.

Orange cap at Walmart! You can also order it online or at amazon. I will say - the cans go far. They only had two left in store, but I got 5 blankets done with those two cans.

Yep, orange cap at Walmart!
