Waterproofing your older blankets

This topic has most likely been covered, but what works best to waterproof your blankets. I tried washing, spraying with Nikwax and heating in the dryer… didn’t work. I am trying to wash with detergent made for horse blankets, and I swear it stripped all waterproofing off of my blankets. I just did two blankets with a tent spray. I hope it works.

What works, I am willing to try anything. My super old Rambo still works, but I need options!

I use a silicone based spray on my older blankets, every year. You can find a bunch of things at Walmart, as well as any camping store. The stuff for shoes works as well- just make sure that it is a waterproofing spray, with a silicone base.

This is what I use as well. Just finished the 12th blanket! Been washing, drying and spraying all week! 🙂

I use the nikwax wash in waterproofing. I always toss my rainjacket in with the sheets lol

I just woke up and was going to post this exact same thing.

What about water proofing blankets that aren’t waterproof already? I’m guessing works the same?

I have a very nice, expensive collection of stable blankets 🙃 all my horses live outside now.

I bought a gallon of silicone based water repellant designed for tents at a local camping supply place. I paint it on.

I am so appreciative of all of these suggestions! I cannot wait to try some different options now to treat my large blanket collection.

From what I understand you can’t really waterproof a stable blanket. All the small holes from where it is stitched will allow water to seep through.

Good to know! I only have one horse who needs blanketed. He outgrew the one I bought last winter (5 and still growing!)

I’ll just hang onto my nice collection, maybe one day I’ll have stalled horses again haha.

You can always use your stable blankets as an underlayer too, if necessary! 🙂

I want to try Bucas rug conditioner this year - any experience?
