Waxed thread? And I mean WAXED. And Cotton.... thread.

Yo homies, can y’all tell a body where she can by some bona fide, really waxed, waxed thread?

The stuff that Shires makes now and calls waxed thread is nylon and not waxed. That’s functionally the opposite of waxed (cotton) thread.

Or, any one going to England this summer? I’m sure they still have it there and perhaps you could import some for us?

Thank you!

Tandy leather has some waxed threads. I use Tiger thread from Abbey England. It’s polyester, but really truly waxed!

Have you tried eBay? They have lots of waxed cotton thread intended for beading and jewelry. Don’t know if that would work for your purpose. Schneider’s carries a waxed thread for braiding, but does not mention what it’s made of. Bit of Britain has waxed polyester thread. Tandy Leather offers waxed thread for awl work. But, again, I’m not sure what the stuff’s made of.

In a pinch, you could make your own waxed thread by drawing the thread across a block of beeswax a few times. I’ve done it myself. Beeswax is available a sewing shops or eBay.

Thanks for the quick replies and the “off label” use of Tandy’s thread or beading thread. Nice to know where I can always find this stuff, even if the old school and high end world of horse showing means our supplies contract.

I get all my waxed thread from Maine Thread Co. Fast shipping, nice family owned company, good colors. They have non waxed cotton cord as well.

Is this for braiding? Why so particular? I have used unwaxed cotton string that is sold as braiding string, and similar #3 crochet string. My button braids routinely last 3 days, and this string seems easy to work with. So, I have never seen any need for waxed – but maybe that is just because I have never used it. What difference does it make?

If you are sewing in braids it’s the only way to fly. Wax helps hold the knots and gives the braid some structure as well as gripping the hair.

I hate braiding with string and 'braiding thread" too slippery and doesn’t hold well.

What weight do you use? So many options! They’re currently on their summer break (back the 10th) so it won’t get here in time for my next show, but still worth supporting a small business, and I have yarn to use for now.

For those of you asking why:
Waxed thread holds as well or better than the yarn I typically use, but also shows less - my mare has a multicolor mane, and I have been looking for a good waxed thread to get for her, and have never seen options like the company soloud mentioned has. In her case, no yarn will match all the different brown/blonde colors in her mane, plus it doesn’t hold in her fuzzies as well as waxed thread will.

I use the smallest double ply which is the 0.030 I think. I have all kinds of colors - I did my horse in navy for the last show but I have done turquoise for fun shows, etc. They are super friendly so give them a call if you want guidance.

I get mine from the Thread Exchange online.

I use dental floss for fixing rugs, etc.
