Wayne Lucas Critical of Derby Trainers

Interesting article with a few quotes from Lucas:

What a classy group of guys!

I love O’Neills quote “If I didn’t win the Derby, you guys wouldn’t be asking that.” He’s been getting heat for years about his milkshaking and jamming horse at Los Alamitos. He must have convenient memory to think it just started with his Derby win.

Lucas had his share of problems when he was at the top of his game, but at least he brought a little class and certainly plenty of charisma to the sport. He was the first to really put on a show backside and frontside. He’s still the very best trainer interview, he does a great job with the media. Kind of makes me nostalgic for 80’s racing when Lucas and Klein were winning everything and the Breeder’s Cup was just the Breeder’s Cup and NOT the World Thoroughbred Championships.

I’m sorry, did I read that right? That DON actually said every horse in his barn goes through a blood and urine exam? LMAO gosh he just keeps spewing out more stupidity hoping the people who don’t know any better will believe him. Nice try.

The blood tests, I will believe…know quite a few trainers that pull blood at least once a month and again if the horse throws in a clunker. Hell, I even do it several times and close together with problem horses.

Lucas Classy?

I hate to disagree, USEventers, but Lukas has no class and little charisma (he’s all ego which is a far cry from charisma). Other than Dick Dutrow, Lukas is at the bottom of the class heap. I’ll be honest, Lukas makes my teeth itch.

On a more cheerful topic, are you going to the Belmont or the Bromont CCI***?

Interesting. Lukas quoted in the New York Post, "
Lukas said he did not know O’Neill beyond saying hello. “But everybody who gets a [drug] positive of any kind is in denial,” he said.

Does he not remember…
By New York Times | September 30, 1994
NEW YORK – Flanders, the undefeated 2-year-old filly trained by Wayne Lukas and a leading candidate for the Juvenile championship, was disqualified yesterday from her first-place finish in the Matron Stakes after she tested positive for a therapeutic drug. The stewards at Belmont Park also notified Lukas that he would be called to a hearing that could result in a 45-day suspension. But Lukas said that he had no knowledge or explanation of the incident, and said: "She doesn’t get any medication.

Sounds like he may be in a bit of denial himself…

Yes but the way Doug says it makes it sound like he gives every single horse a blood and urine and full physical exam before every race. Those blood tests being pulled also aren’t checking for drugs like he makes it sound either, they are looking for health problems.

Or maybe he’s checking to make sure something ISN’T showing up before he runs the horse, and it is subjected to testing  Anybody know what his scratch record is?

Lucas is an ass hole… ask anyone around when Saratoga Six was good what the horse endured…
Guy trains as sore as anyone… He clearly never scopes a sale horse, million dollar or otherwise, as when you hear a horse “breathing” it is a Lucas horse. What a joke. Lucas needs a brain exam.

Sorry to inform you but Lukas was the King of breakdowns for many years. He was one of the original large racing empires that you see today. He was also well know as a needle man. Few dared claim off of him as many horses pulled up lame after a race.

At that time,KY was very lax on allowable meds and he used all he could.

When I speak of racing cleaning itself up,he is one that has done so. Racing is a lot cleaner now than in the past when testing was not as sophisticated.

There’s no doubt Lucas has plenty of drug positives and break downs and lot of people in the industry can’t stand him. He trained and bought multiple 2 yo’s from my family, so I know something about his training methods. He could be VERY VERY hard on his horses and he loved speed, which was a deadly combination on the hard/fast tracks of CA. Many of his young horses didn’t hold up long. I could go on and on about nice horses that got lost in his stable never living up to their potential, but that’s an insider view of him.

I was more referring to how the outside views these guys. Lucas always handles the media and presents himself well to a TV audience. He looks and acts the part frontside and was one of the first to put on a show backside. He’s always taken the time to talk the media before and after the races. He’s a good interview and he’s good in front of the camera. It’s definitely ego, charisma and a bit of Hollywood. Whatever it is, it works for him. So many trainers are either boring (Pletcher), run the media off (Tagg) or idiots (Dutrow). It was just nice having someone in the business that could work the media instead of run them off. It’s always good for racing.

I happen to agree with the opinion that it was the introduction of these quarterhorse trainers to Tb racing that nudged its decline.

I can’t recall DWayne ever campaigning a horse past it’s 3rd year.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Lady’s Secret was HOTY at age 4 and retired at age 5.

Granted, that’s going back nearly 30 years.

It’s sad that these trainers are stooping to accusing each other, especially when they have their own skeletons in the closet.

It’s almost like watching politicians going at each others throats.

Really don’t know what they are accomplishing other than look petty and bitter over someone else ending up in the winner’s circle.

You can put a huge amount of blame on the 2 yo sales in FL. The 2 yo sales and breeding/pinhooking more speed to get bigger prices for 2 yo’s. The sales were moved up earlier and earlier to accomodate winter trainers. All this started in the late 70’s and definitely affected TB breeding.

We have many QH trainers that are fine (Baffert) and I think the very worst out there (Biancone) came from European racing.

I agree!

Who is Wayne Lucas?

Oh, Laurie.

I am pretty sure the non spelling oriented members are referring to D.Wayne Lukas.

No one I know of named “wayne lucas,” but D Wayne is an ass. For years of galloping on Cali tracks whenever I passed him in the am’s I would say “good morning” as I did to everyone. Never a word back from him. I was just another exercise rider.

However when we’re rubbing elbows in the Pimlico Stakes barn Preakness week, oh well then now I am worth talking to. Nice. Guess what asshat…I still remember I wasn’t good enough for you to greet or nod at back out west. Kiss my ass. And thankfully our horse beat his. (Huge shock…not)

I’m pretty sure the member’s spelling has nothing to do with it. If you’ll go back and read the post, the poster was QUOTING (and linking) the news article who referred to him as Wayne Lucas.

Really???

Here’s what’s on the linked article…

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas criticizes behavior of fellow peers

BALTIMORE (AP) – Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas criticized the behavior of a few of his peers Wednesday, saying the actions of a few recent Kentucky Derby winners have tarnished the reputation of his profession.
