My horse has a winter turnout with a neck cover, but I wanted to put a therapeutic sleazy type hood underneath for some neck soreness. He lives outside 24/7 so I’m wondering if the exposed lycra material on his face could cause issues and make him cold if it got snowed on or whatever? If so, is there anything I can do to avoid that?
If it’s not waterproof and it gets wet, then it will make him colder. I think lycra snags easily too. So if it’s completely covered so it can’t get wet or snag, maybe try it.
I agree that it will snag and not be waterproof. Curious how therapeutic lycra could be, anyway? What is the reason for neck soreness? There might be better methods to treat it.
I wouldn’t-- if the neck cover is causing rubs or issues, take it off.
SnuggyHoods makes a nice turnout hood.

I wouldn’t. If the hood shifts and manages to cover his eyes, it would be disastrous.
Agree, so dangerous for turnout. Lycra wont hold heat anyways. It’s basically useless for the purpose you need it for. Just get a proper Amigo turnout with a detachable hood. You could always get a Back on Track mesh rug if you’re into that kind of stuff.
It would be under a waterproof neck cover. The lycra one is similar to BOT with the ceramic infused fabric. So it would NOT be for warmth and would be completely covered except the part on his face. The entire neck portion would be under his turnout blanket neck cover, as I explained in my original post.
Ceramic infused fabric is intended to create warmth.
You asked, “I’m wondering if the exposed lycra material on his face could cause issues and make him cold if it got snowed on or whatever?” and the answer was yes.
Can’t you just get lycra neck cover? Then neck cover for blanket would protect it. Then no worry about it shifting and covering eyes.
You will want to check with the product manufacturer to see if it is recommended for turn out situations.
