My narrow TB is getting rubs on his shoulder in his smartpak blanket. His previous owner said he wore a weatherbeeta freestyle but I can’t seem to find hardly any in his size - is the comfitech the same fit does anyone know? thank you!
Yes- the Comfitec is a pretty similar fit to the old WB Freestyle. Some models have a few different features on the front closures and they don’t gap as much in front as they used to.
I think they’re similar, and I like the wither padding, but otherwise I hate my Cofitec Dynamic. The hardware is nice, but the blanket is not Waterproof. I swapped it out for a cheap Amigo sheet. I don’t use sheets much, and really wanted to like the Weatherbeeta, but it just isn’t Waterproof and my horse loves standing in the rain.
The particular model I have seems to run larger in the front end than my Horseware blankets. My P.R.E is a thicker fellow and still has plenty of room at the neck and the blanket is a bit roomy. So I’m not sure it’d be great for a finer or narrow horse.
You could also try a Bossy Bib under his already existing blanket and see if that helps.
Love the Comfitech. 2 TB’s, one narrow - no rubs.
My Paint gelding has tons of TB in his pedigree and is built like one, not a stock horse. He is narrow in front. I got him some blankets years ago that fit perfectly but are no longer being made. I tried WB (Freestyle rubbed a lot), SmartPak, Pessoa among others, and nothing worked. They “fit” him, but the shoulder/neck was cut too generously so they didn’t keep his shoulders dry. I got in touch with the store owner from my original purchase and she suggested Horze blankets which she has been using on her own horses.
Horze was not a brand I would have looked at as a blanket maker, and wasn’t convinced when I looked online. I saw them at Equine Affaire a few weeks later and bought him a wardrobe (buy 2 get one free).
I really like them - they fit well and are well made. The front is very adjustable with 2 sets of double T buckles. The shoulder gussets are very deep. They are high neck but there is a triangular gusset which rides above the withers and does not rub. Keeps him dry. Also a huge tail flap and plenty of length in the body.
They aren’t cheap but I think worth the investment because my horse is 24 and boarded outside. He is in a medium weight most of the time, a sheet when it is warmer and rainy, heavyweight for the really brutally cold below zero Maine weather. I still ride 6 days a week, so I know he is warm and dry. I have seen specials online. I wanted a snowsuit, and found a medium with insulated neck for $115 (vs. $175) but haven’t used it yet. One of our old friends came back for the winter, and she had a medium which she likes on her mare.
I gathered up all his other stuff and donated to the refuge barn at the Maine State Society for the Protection Animals. Even if the water resistance is gone, they can be used inside when it’s cold.
I have a 100 gram Comfitec and 220 gram Freestyle in the same size and don’t notice any difference in the design/fit.
