Weatherbeeta Kool Coat Airstream Fly Sheet....and others

Does anyone use this fly sheet?
I’ve been having a heck of a time getting an answer from any one company that sells this sheet about whether or not it has an attachment at the pole to help keep the neck cover up by connecting to a fly mask or halter. Does anyone know?

Alternately, does anyone have suggestions for a similar sheet in the same price range that does if this one does not?

It does not.

Additionally, I have heard it is really hot and not breathable as it has nylon lining.

The nylon lining is just on the shoulder, and even in 90* heat on the rare occasions we have it, it worked fine for my guys (until they didn’t fit right anymore). It doesn’t have an attachment for the poll, but I never had an issue with it falling down.

I bought the Weatherbeeta Air Flow (I think) and love the fit. I worried about the major drop on the neck cover, but it worked slick all last summer and no issues.

I would add that I don’t think you want that to attach to a halter or fly mask. When the horse puts its head down, it’ll put a ton of pull on whatever it is attached to.

I used it last summer and it even survived.

I didn’t notice that it was particularly hot. I had a Schneiders sheet that was much hotter in the past (the flowy mesh kind not the hard mesh type).

I would never attach it to the halter (and no it isn’t built for that) because, like Tee said, you want the neck to move when the horse grazes.

This sheet fit my horse the best. I tried several. It’s not an amazing sheet, but it is nice for the price point. My biggest complaint is that if you don’t do the belly band pretty tight it will shift. I did the back straps around the leg and did not criss-cross and that seemed to help a little.

This has been my favorite fly sheet for years. My black horse has always been cool in it. Or as cool as can be expected in humid Virginia. It does not have a way to attach to a flymask or halter, nor would that be something I would ever really consider.

My biggest complaint is that it doesn’t have crossed surcingles. I think that’s part of the reason they stay cool (it’s floaty and loose), but my horse got hung up in his one afternoon when it ripped and slipped between his foot and his shoe. Thankfully, he was found quickly, and stay calm while he got untangled. I haven’t used one since. Do note that that was the first major issue I had ever had with one. I had used them for years on many horses until then.

I had the “Kool coat” one and within two months the bellyband tore off. Never had an issue like that before.

Okay so you guys make a good point about attaching to a halter. This is my first year considering a neck cover fly sheet. Last year my OTTB had hives along his neck/throat at least once a month after a heavy rain when the mosquitoes were just horrible, and I’m trying to prevent a similar summer this year before it happens. We’re in Florida, the deep humid kind of Florida, so staying cool is of concern to me, as well.

How does the neck cover stay up? I assume as long as the horse has it’s head down grazing it’s probably not of much concern, is it? (duh, logic sets in after a question is asked heh).

Any other types you’d all consider, knowing that we’re in Florida where it’s in the high 90’s with humidity? They’re stalled during the day, and out at night, so he won’t actually be in sunlight or disgusting heat, probably an average in the 80’s at night, with the sheet off during the day while he’s in front of his fan.

There’s such a variety, it’s been difficult to narrow it down. I’d been eyeing the schneider’s sheets, as his winter blankets are schneiders…but the mosquito mesh sheets I’ve heard are heavier and not soft. The micro mesh I heard is softer and cooler, as well as easier on the budget than the mosquito mesh, but I still can’t seem to make up my mind. The Kool Coat seemed like a promising option, and now that I realize the halter/mask attachment is likely not a good idea, it makes me reconsider it again…

The necks on WBs seem to run pretty big and may sag more in comparison with Horseware sheets with necks unless your horse is pretty large. The one I’ve experienced stays up the best is the Rambo fly buster (except for when my horse would unvelcro the one his pasture buddy wore), but I think none of them will provide full protection when the head is down grazing for the same reasons why you wouldn’t want to attach the neck piece to the halter.

In my experience, the stiff sheets will not slouch on the neck as much. BUT they aren’t usually designed for mosquitos–more for biting flies. It’s a trade-off.

I bought this sheet because it was cheap. I do agree it’s a bit warmer than the mesh-type sheets, think “daysheet”. I don’t use it because it shifts to the side a LOT and with all the fabric floating around, one side sure doesn’t need to hang down any farther…begs for a hoof to get stuck in. (read above)
