WEG "test ride a reiner" sign up at NRHA/AQHA booth

“With the help of John Deere, MD Barns and Kiser Arena Specialists, NRHA and AQHA staff are busy preparing the John Deere Reining Arena. Last night, Brett and his daughter Bailey Walters hauled in the first Ride A Reiner horses with owners Ann Bernard and Kim Switzer. They look great and ready to show the lucky Ride A Reiner participants a good time!
Thanks to Bailey, Kim, Ann and Brett for bringing their reining horses to the Kentucky Horse Park for Ride A Reiner! Want to try a spin on “Beemer,” “Doc,” “Streak,” “Butch,” or “Frankie?” Sign up at the NRHA/AQHA booth located in the WEG Tradeshow.”

I don’t know how they are limiting riders, but worth a look if you are interested.

Sounds really cool. Anyone there done this?

We saw this but didn’t know how to sign up. Now we do. Thanks It was really neat to watch.

Awesome!!! Riding a good reiner… is a thrill

I heard about this, but didn’t believe it! I am not exactly sure how you ride a reining horse (or get it to do any of the fun things they do for that matter!) but I am sure if someone just told me I could give it whirl and hopefully stay on!

When are they doing the rides?

I would LOVE to ride a good reiner.

Go to the NRHA/AQHA booth and find out, Pumpkin

Leslie Potter on horsechannel.com blogged about riding a reiner at the WEG. It’s pretty entertaining.

Anyone done this? Will it still be on Friday? Would love to try it while there!

I got selected for the 1230 spot yesterday and I rode Butch! It was awesome, we had Clinton Anderson as a clincian and he was entertaining as well!

I have never ridden a reining horse so I had no idea how it was going to be! I will say I did get dizzy on one of my spins and when Butch stopped, I almost fell out of the saddle! The sliding stops were easier to ride and stay on than I thought they would be!

It was an awesome experience, I would recommend it!

I did get the schedule today…planning to sign up my non-horsey friend for a spin, heh, heh, heh…

How long is the wait and how do they know your experience before hand?!?

I am going straight there to sign up on wednesday!!

We watched some of it and it was really cool. If you can’t ride a “real” horse, over by the KHP museum and the pony rides, there is a great activity of a horse and a track and a calf, both controlled by motors that gives you a feel of riding a cutting horse. That was a lot of fun to do.

My sister was in this same group! She had a blast as well, and the added bonus of Clinton Anderson, who was funny as hell!

Go to the NRHA/AQHA booth and fill out an application. There are 2 or 3 (or 4) slots a day and the drawing is random. You get to check which times would work for you. Be prepared with fairly proper shoes and jeans/long pants/breeches.

Also look for the mechanical cutting horse over in the Equine Village. I hear that’s way fun as well!!

I saw this - it looked super cool, wish I would have known how to sign up!

They do the same “ride a reiner” at the top reining futurities and last year used two of our horses, courtesy of my friend the reining trainer.
They used one of them again this year, that he bought from us.

When spinning, look straight ahead at the horizon without focusing, don’t look at the horse’s head, that will make you dizzy.
Most of those horses offered in that program won’t outspin from under you, they should be even and smooth and carry you along.
There should be a red cone out there by the wall you can target on to count your spins and stop by.
Ask the horse to start spinning and leave it alone, he should spin without you keeping after him, unless they tell you to do so.
Keep your weight in the middle, a hair on the outside stirrup.

If you get a chance, you ought to try it.

I didn’t even realize they were doing this until I read about it in one of the magazines on the plane home! Would have loved to try it.
