I think in my home, cold water to the kitchen tap doesn’t run through the softener but everything else does.
From what I understand, you also don’t want to fill fish tanks from the softened water either.

Just what we have - everywhere in the valley has arsenic in the water so we have a little tap on the sink for drinking, cooking, fridge ice. It is part of the building codes for brand new houses. Suggest you get a water test.
But for outside hoses, we have them direct from the house before the water gets to the filtration system, like for the garden and pots to save the maintenance on the system.

All of our water runs through the softner, and we have a filter before it gets there to preserve the life of the softner. I can’t imagine our drinking water not going through the softner. It’s gross even with the filter.
”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹We are going to add a reverse osmosis tap at the sink for drinking water.
Old thread but … We have a reverse osmosis filter at kitchen sink for drinking… The ice maker is tapped into it. Made a huge difference in the taste of the ice. Be aware the water produced is 1 part of 5. The rest is down the drain. That is each gallon of pure water means four gallons was dumped.
^^^This is how our house is set up. All water goes thru the whole house softener and we use the reverse osmosis filtered water for drinking and cooking, the water from the reverse osmosis filter is so much better tasting.
