welsh breeder dispersal sale

Does anyone know anything about the Kelly Acres welsh ponies ? Sporthorse auctions is handling the dispersal sale and it looks like mostly unbroke youngsters. Does anyone have a going pony of theirs and can tell me what its like ? Several different bloodlines… not entirely sure what I’m looking at here

A few people commented on a thread I started a week or so ago on this sale.

I am a long time Welsh breeder from Canada. All I’m going to say is whoever purchases these ponies needs to make sure they are knowledgeable and experienced in regards to dealing with unhandled animals. I’m glad to see these animals hopefully finding good homes.

Daventry - I got that feeling watching a few of the videos, kinda reminded me of the BLM Adoption auctions…

I am surprised at the number of them that did not have papers. And the ones out of Welsh mares by a grade stallion. This is not that important if they are broke to ride and are trained. But broodmares and stallions - that really limits their market. A lot of them are very cute and I hope they all get a safe landing.

I hope someone will be kind enough to buy the 25 yr old mare.

I had not even looked at their ages. So disappointed in this breeder. :frowning:

Daventry, perhaps the Welsh community will take a look and use the Facebook network to help save such or encourage a humane end to those not as likely to find a soft landing. I can float this by Mel and see if she can work some wonders as I know she has in the past.

While I am well aware of the circumstances of their raising, handling, etc, I do know of more than a few very productive stock that have come out of there and even a well broke one that I seriously considered that was from their riding program. A thorough understanding of what is being offered is only wise.

What is the back story on this farm if I might ask ? If negative pls pm me, was there once a riding program ? it didn’t look like many were going or had performance records, which was my original concern. I’m not up for being the first one to put my hands on a feral youngster anymore  but a few looked cute, though hard to tell what they move like in the deep footing shown

There’s a Fjord horse in there, I wonder if @IronwoodFarm has seen this?

I will say that Daventry is dead on in her PSA. It has been long known and observed that this breeding program has an ‘outwest’ feel to it. There has been a riding program in place but that doesn’t necessarily incorporate ALL of their youngstock or breeding stock. I have looked at trained horses that they’ve had for sale and almost bought one for my daughter. The only thing that nixed it was the distance and cost of transport compared to another prospect who I ended up buying. I found the primary owner/manager of the operation forthcoming when I asked questions. If I didn’t ask, information wasn’t necessarily volunteered. Also riding program does NOT equate to documented performance record/show record. I’ve run into more than one Welsh breeder who ran similar styles of operation so this one is not unique. What is ‘unique’ is that they’ve been able to maintain such a large operation with this style of approach/management further into ‘this day and age’ compared to the many who closed their doors in the 90s. There are definitely some nice individuals offered up but I would venture to say that the majority aren’t meant for beginners to take on and think that North Forks Cardi or Gem Twist will be the result. That being said I wish them well and hope that all of the ponies find decent homes. None of them bargained for such a crap shoot.

Like a few people have mentioned, there are some nice ponies available in this auction. I do get the impression they are a bit feral and it will take an experienced person to start and train one. There is quality for someone willing to pay the shipping and put in the time with a pony that has had little handling. Since there has not been a bid on any of them, I have a feeling they could be bought for the minimum.

Locally, there is gorgeous Mardi Gras pony that has done it all. Some of his siblings are listed in the auction. This guy is a little older, but is sound and still going well for his owner. He is very fancy.

Still following this auction, like sparkygrace said, there has not been a single bid, and there are, count 'em, 60 of them :frowning: Pls tell me ponies are too small to garner the attention of meat buyers…I wish they weren’t so far away or such raw material.

If you look at the top of the auction page, it mentions bidding doesn’t open until July 9th.

So far 19/58 have bids. The Auction ends on the 16th.

None of the mares that are 20yrs+ have any bids. :frowning:

I have not had any correspondence with the owner regarding the auction or the issues her family faces; but, my guess is that if they do not sell they will be euthanized. Worse things could happen.

That for sure would be the best for them if good homes are not found.

Quite a few were not sold. https://internethorseauctions.com/auction.php?aucid=345
