Welsh pony "look"

I have a friend who told me she recently looked at a 4 yr old Welsh pony that didn’t look like any Welsh she had seen before. Light boned, longer head, thinner sides. Seller didn’t have papers available at the time. Was wondering if there was a certain look to a welsh or if they come in all body types. Thanks

There are 4 sections and they’re all pretty different. Section A is Welsh mountain pony - dish faced cute pony. Section B is taller and makes a show hunter pony - they’re turned out more refined/trimmed unless in breed classes. Sections C and D are pony of cob type and cob, respectively. So thicker but still with that classic Welsh face. Shown natural - feathers, mane and tail.

There aren’t too many Welsh ponies who could be described as anything but pretty round, but they all have a refined head.

Well they all have that refined head and doe eye look if they’re well bred  just sayin and that is from one who had those with more of a coarse head structure so not breeding material but definitely performance animals. Being one of the Welsh Cob breeders I have to say that YES Welsh have ‘a look’ and most of those fond of the breed (one or all sections) knows a Welsh when they see one.

Sounds like more of a crossbred pony to me. It shocks me how many people will call something welsh without papers. Assuming isn’t knowing.

“Sounds like more of a crossbred pony to me.”

Agreed - some pretty nice crossbreds out there but even those usually have a pretty strong Welsh stamp on them. Without papers you don’t really know how much if any Welsh blood is in there.

Lots of Welsh/Arab and Welsh/BRP and Welsh/GRP in my area. Half-welsh is a particular hot ticket at the moment in pony hunters, so a cross wouldn’t be at all surprising. Unless the seller can indicate sire/dam (or at least one), then it’s a guess.

I have a Welsh. He’s very typey. Huge liquid eye that looks like a mercury puddle, dishy face, pony ears, round barreled, moves like a minature Andalusian. And good hard feet. From your description your friend was looking at ‘just a pony’ without any further proof and then if that, not a classic type so I’d question the true breeding, at the least the quality of it.

Crossbreds have been popular in the pony hunter ring since the 1960’s.

Certainly not disagreeing that half-welshes have always been around. I just never saw them going for $20k+ until the last ten years.

Maybe in Canada? But they been selling for WAY more than that for decades!!

Many people try to pass Hackney crosses as a Welsh cross. Light boned makes me thing Hackney pony somewhere in there.
