West Coast people -- what is this horse worth?

16 year old draft X TB. 3’ equitation and .90 jumper packer. Bombproof. Has won multiple lower level equitation medals and division championships. Needs maintenance but will pass PPE. You can put anyone on him. Literally will go over anything an never spook, push ride. Takes a joke etc. Saint.

What is a reasonable price range.

Priceless! Ha. No, I’d say $20K to $30K easily.

Does he have an auto change?

Oh yes, he can do it all. Counter canter, auto change, etc

Agree! My friend has just outgrown him and needs to sell to buy her next horse and I think she’s getting some bad advice… Thank you!

I know his age might be a factor however. That might push him down into the $15k-$18k category for buyers. But not less than that in our current level of demand in the PNW. Horses of his kind are so rare right now. Call Jill at QR… bet she’d know some interested parties!! :wink:

Is he 16 this year, or coming 17?

That is definitely the age when I start to get nervous about him needing to step down and/or retire in the next couple years. Certainly, it could be challenging to sell him on when the rider outgrows him.

Nonetheless, I agree on the 20-30k range because it is so rare to find such a perfect citizen. Even a lease on him would probably be at least 25k.

Depends on where in West Coast. In SoCal, non-eventing barns, you may get a little bit of snobbery around Draft x TB (A cross that I have absolutely enjoyed, but I grew up riding on the East Coast with hunts where this was far more common).

Many eq people down in LA/SD have $$$ and wouldn’t want anything not WB. I say this is a golden ticket for many, despite them not realizing it. To the right buyer, as others have said $20-$30k - higher if he’s 16 and not coming 17, and higher yet if he doesn’t ‘look drafty’. A jumper adult ammy who isn’t unnecessarily snobby about breeds would love him!

PNW/ Central CA & with eventers (if he can do dressage) will maybe give him more credit where credit is due, and the price to match.

I’d agree with close to $30k especially if he’s been sound doing that level or higher previously in his life. No performance horse is going to be 110% sound, so maintenance is to be expected (almost) regardless of age, especially that broke/schooled.

Flexible is still jumping small jumps at 25 (ish?). It all depends on the horse, obviously!

I’d easily expect to pay that much for my child to have a SAFE (and happy) horse to show. So, there’s my perspective.

I think the value really depends upon the show record.

A. Lower level medal experience at local unsanctioned horse shows? 2’6”-3’?

B. Or competitive in 2’6”-3’ medals at USEF B sanctioned shows?

C. Or competitive at 2’6”-3’ medals at A/AA sanctioned shows?

A= under 15K
B=12-20K
C=20K+

I remember a similar cross, showing on the West coast, qualifying the junior rider for several medal finals. Really smooth reliable horse but clearly a draft cross. The trainer arranged the lease of an experienced Warmblood for those medal finals held at A/AA shows.

Thanks – he’s “C” - all A/AA shows. Thank you

I’ve been debating asking Jill, thank you.

You can just send him to me. :wink:

But really, I see bombproof packers going for 20,000 to 30,000 easy in my area.

I would post videos and pictures on the Plaid Horse Thermal discussion page on Facebook and see if there is any interest.

Include his USEF number so people can look up his results.

Good idea!!

There are also a ton of ISO posts, so you may find someone looking for this exact horse.

I’ve been watching the market pretty aggressively in the last couple years and it seems like this year in particular, there is a huge demand for the horse you’re describing. I see horses with this description go up and sell real quick in the 25K range. I think this year people are prioritizing showing/winning this year over finding something to move up with in a year or two. There can be a stigma with a draft cross but I think in the market right now it would get lost in the noise because the demand for a school master is so high.

I think that a horse marketed for sale should have serious interest within a few weeks or months; IF it’s priced correctly (and the location is certainly an important part of that equation).

Thinking of those horses still for sale a year, two or seven years; later. Those sellers KNOW what their horses are WORTH. They still have them…
