My mother wants to get me a pair of cowboy boots for my birthday this year. I’ve always been an English rider but I have been branching out more. Neither of us knows much about western boots. She wants to get me a pair that’s not just a fashion statement and can be used/ridden in. Which brands should I steer her towards and which ones should she avoid?
Double H boots are pretty dark comfy. To be honest, the brand will probably depend on your foot shape and width. Lots of people rave about Justins and Ariats, but they never fit my foot which is wider. Double H boots fit me beautifully. Lucchese would be my favorite boot maker, but if you’re just looking for a riding boot then these might be a bit much in cost.
I want to second the Double H boots. I bought my first pair last fall and love them!
I have all Ariats. Lacers and pull ons (ProBaby) and find them very durable and comfortable. Didn’t like the Justins at all.
I can’t wear Ariats, but love the Anderson Bean and Lucchese boots. You will really need to try them on and see for yourself which brand fits. If you’re going to be wearing them all day, definitely go for comfort first.
For my foot the AB and Lucchese fit too loose in the foot and instep. I need Ariat so that they don’t fall off when I ride.
I have a pair of Dan Post, and a pair of Boulet’s. I like my Post boots but love my Boulets! It really depends on your feet. My Boulets were 250 CDN which is a good decent price for boots, but are made in Canada, which rates much higher in my books when alot of ‘brand name’ boots are made overseas.

I have a pair of Ariat Fat Babys that I love. I’ve had them for YEARS. Very comfortable for all day wear, I ride in them, etc. However, I’m going to get some insoles for them because if I’m on my feet all day long, the lack of arch support makes my arches just a little sore.
Well, I love my Luccheses, but they for sure don’t go near horse manure.
For day to day riding, I prefer my Noconas to my Ariats. I have owned Tony Lamas in the past too. And I have a pair of 20+ yo Dan Post that I haven’t used since I had 'em reheeled a few years ago- they’ve served me well but I like the Noconas better (which BTW I got on sale some years ago for $60, marked down from a couple of hundred bucks if memory serves).
I have a narrow foot so Justins were my go to for YEARS! Then finally Ariat came out with a pair that I adore. My every day boots are Ariats and for the sanity of your toes do not get the pointed toe/square toe. Aim for the round toe if you can. I personally do not like the fatbaby styles but plenty of people do.
I love Double H boots, they were the best fit for my super high instep and duck feet. Can get by with Justins but not much else - the ever popular Boulet and Ariats just are too shallow in the throat and instep and while I only have a size 6 foot, I am in a men’s 9 or better before I can get the danged things on. You really do have to be fitted properly for boots and not by a regular shoe salesman…er person but by someone that specialises in fitting western boots. Make sure the boot has a steel shank and is pegged if you intend to ride in them, far more comfortable that way and a riding heel is more comfortable as well, even for walking.
I have been wearing Tony Lamas for a few years now and love them. They do have a slightly higher heel than some other cowboy boots though and tend to run narrow. Anderson Beans - LOVE THEM. And the company will resole the boots if they need to be done.
I love the Ariat ProBabys. Mine are so comfortable I actually rarely ride in them (predominantly English rider here), but I wear them all winter long instead of sneakers. I have one pair that’s 5 years old and is pretty beat up, but they still wear fine. I have 3 pairs in various stages of destruction. Old ones for messy farm chores, newer for riding and whatnot. Newest for non barn things.
Ariat Heritage Ropers…they are like wearing butter and great to ride in. TSC carries them.
My mom ended up getting me a pair of Ariats. The “Heritage Western R toe.” They fit like a glove! I decided to wear them to the barn today to start the breaking in process. OMG! There was no breaking in process! They are unbelieveably comfortable, I forgot they had them on and ended up spending 5 hours walking around in them today. Why did no one tell me about cowboy boots before now. I would have spent a lot less time lacing up paddock boots, or complaining about broken zippers.

I’m wearing my Ariat Heritage Western X Toes right now! I ride in my Tony Lamas, but my Ariats are my “gettin’ fancy” boots that I wear out to work and various other places where they won’t get dirty :lol:
They really are great boots and unlike paddock boots they look good outside the barn
