Western Dressage Show

We have just co![](e back from out second big show of the year, Western Dressage again, and we had a great time. The positives: He behaved beautifully, everyone loved him, ring steward, the tack and equipment checker, the kiddies who were chatting to him, and the judge, who kept saying what a nice horse he is on his test sheets. The weekend started horribly, when we were unloading our kit I discovered that not only had I left my garment bag, with my show clothes hanging on a rail at home, but also my headstall! So we had to go shopping, I had another headstall with me, but he didn’t like the bit that was on it, so I had to buy another, the fact that it was the right mouthpiece, measured 5 1/2" and looks awesome on my black headstall made it a no brainer, then a trip to Walmart got me sorted out!

The bad news, well it’s not bad, she was a very tough marker, across the board, same judge for Western and the Gold and Bronze level English show, so the playing field was level. My coach and I have some issues with some of the marks, but overall I need to get Gibbs flowing more, and working through. On the good side we really got it together on a few occasions, a really got a glimpse of the horse that he can be, if I become the rider that can get him there. Given the amount of saddle time I have had because of the weather and seeding etc, then I was happy overall, and at times just got a few steps of a horse so soft and light and rounded that it made me want to cry!

OK, pictures:

All clean bathed and chilling after warm up on Friday

But left for 2 seconds while I hung up his headstall, he made himself into a unicorn

It helps with showing of you give your horse a pep talk on the way out to the warm up.

Very nice! Which tests did you do?

This year just Intro 1 and 2 and Basic 1, loping is still kind of a big deal for us  When my trainer first posted the show schedules and I said that while we were travelling I said that I would do Intro 1 &2, and Basic 1&2, and the response was “Really?” LOL, I got the message and said I would stick to the Intro, but we compromised.

In Saskatchewan here it is the first year of WD, and they only offer Intro and Basic, they need to offer more next year, it is very very frustrating to be riding against someone who is scoring consistent high 70’s in walk trot, he should be riding at a way higher level. At the moment though we need numbers in the ring to show organizers that there is a call for WD, so we have to kind of go with it.

Nice job! And you and Mr. Gibbs look great together.

Where was the show? Let me know where the next one is and if it isn’t horribly far, would like to see it.

Good for you! Thanks for all the pictures -I looked at every last one. I do like the look of no noseband in Western bridles!

Last weekend it was at Willow Ridge in Saskatoon, next one we are at is Moose Jaw, 23rd August, there is WD at the Medicine Hat Allbreed Show on 17th July, but that is just a bit far for me to go.

I am going to keep Moose Jaw in mind…that isn’t too terribly far, and depending on harvest, I might be able to sneak away. Medicine Hat is too far for me as well.

Willow Ridge? No clue, haven’t been to S’toon for years, only places I knew were the place I boarded at, Rusty Spurs and Partington’s. Was hard to find a place race horse friendly

Willow Ridge is a beautiful facility, just on the south west of the city.

Harvest?? In August?? I guess you got seeded before mid June:) I am 100% confident that I will not be needed in the combine that weekend. Well 99% sure that I wont be needed, and 100% sure I won’t be available.

First off will be lentils - they were in around mid May. I am just the gopher -gofer to get this, gofer to get that and all round chauffeur and coffee runner.

I think I know where Willow Ridge is now…took a bit of map staring and digging back. It’s on what we referred to as the Beaver Creek road.

 Oh yes, I get the gopher role, that is my job in seeding time, but in harvest I get to be the star player!!
